Kiddo and I are now among the very few people in North Alabama to get the latest COVID booster. Made the appointment early this week at the Publix pharmacy for them to order in the doses. Apparently they are not keeping much if any on hand for nonexistent walk-ins and hardly any appointments.

Jabbed yesterday evening with Moderna’s finest, and within a couple hours I was exhausted and could feel the injection site becoming really tender. Went to bed to sleep it off, but Kiddo woke up in the wee hours vomiting, so that was the end of sleep for both of us for most of the night.

My upper arm is screamingly sore, I have body aches all over, and nearby lymph nodes are getting angry. Kiddo continues to feel flu-ish—low fever, exhaustion, headache. Good times.

Hope you feel better soon. The vaccine always kicks my ass. Doesn’t matter if it’s Pfizer or Moderna. I totally get it.

I was planning on re-upping my booster in the next couple of weeks but then I tested positive yesterday, so there goes that for a little while. :man_facepalming:

Anecdotal, but the booster does not seem to be preventing infection as well as the others. I was surprised to test positive within 3 weeks of getting boosted. Definitely worked to decrease symptom severity though–cold symptoms vs feeling like death.

Gonna get ours in 2 weeks. Kii-kitten had both COVID and flu at wellness check. Damned convenient when I schedule that at the end of September. The pediatrician has smaller needles and a nurse who is really good at sticking. Kid freaked out slightly less this time than last. Progress!
Kii-kitten ran a fever of 102. Knocked it down to 100 with some Tylenol for 18 hours. Lots of body aches but no vomiting thankfully.

Our pediatrician’s nurse is amazing too! They don’t have any COVID vaccines this year because the uptake is so poor, but they will give family members of patients flu shots, and I get mine there because I’m a big baby about needles.

We just got our covid vaccine in my office. Uptake is actually better than I expected.

Years ago our pediatrician used this thing called a shot blocker for my son. They didn’t have any the next round of shots, so I nabbed one when they did have them again. I bring it along for him whenever he’s getting a shot, either at the doctor or pharmacy. They’ve been happy to use them, and you really don’t notice the shot. If you’re nervous about the needles, get some.
You can buy them yourself now, found this article on them, that picture is what they look like

In the good old days we got two shots of whiskey & were allowed to punch the doctor afterwards.

Child at College: “We decided to wear masks in class today, XXXX got COVID.”

Gives me hope for the next generation
told the child that too. It’s a shame that XXXX had to be the crash test dummy, but still.

ARRGGGHHH.

Went shopping today. There were 3 other people besides me and my wife wearing masks. Sadly, this in and of itself is a recent record. Of those 3 EVERY SINGLE ONE was wearing it below their mouth.

How long COVID could lift the fog on neurocognitive disorders

Insights from a new critical mass of patients are proving invaluable.

https://www.nature.com/articles/d41586-024-03047-4

Neurocognitive symptoms, including an impaired ability to process and memorize information, are among the most common and debilitating manifestations of long COVID, a disease experienced by as many as 400 million people worldwide, by one recent estimate (Z. Al-Aly et al. Nature Med. 30, 2148–2164; 2024). These symptoms, which can develop alongside those resulting from diseases of the lungs, heart and other organs, affect patients’ everyday functioning for months or even years following COVID-19. Matthew Fitzgerald, a 28-year-old former engineer at Tesla, described his long-COVID-related impairment during a clinic visit: “I’m a shell of myself. My physical issues aren’t half as bad as my brain problems. You can say brain fog, but that doesn’t come close to doing it justice.”
