We are still dealing with preliminary figures here, but Japan is set to top 60,000 new cases for the first time today, with at least 31 prefectures setting new records, including Tokyo (12,813), Osaka (8,612) and Aichi (4,120). Hospitals are beginning to fill up again, but ICU usage rates are still low, so the government does not seem poised to enact emergency measures just yet…
The positivity rate in Osaka is above 50% and the prefectural government is preparing to implement its own measures independent of the national government.

Our Meijer has been pretty good. A few months ago when numbers were low mask wearing went down but since Omicron mask wearing has gone up considerably. All the employees wear one.
But depending on the time of day and day customers aren’t all on board. It’s usually people with kids and young adults that don’t care.
The closest grocery store to us, Kroger, is a different story, no one wears masks in there. That has to do with all the last guy flags still flying.

The family says he was at the front of the line to receive a transplant but because he has not received the COVID-19 vaccination he is no longer eligible according to hospital policy. And Ferguson says his son refuses to get the shot.
“It’s kind of against his basic principles, he doesn’t believe in it. It’s a policy they are enforcing and so because he won’t get the shot, they took him off the list of a heart transplant,” Ferguson said.

(Can’t find it in English yet, sorry. Researchers at one of the big hospitals in Norway think they’ve found evidence of Covid there in 2019. This isn’t mentioned in the article, but for a while Chinese health authorities were claiming that the virus was imported into China from Norway, in salmon shipments. I wonder if they’ll revive that theory now.)

According to their findings — described here much more simply than the actual study — the combination of two compounds, 7-hydroxystaurosporine and bafetinib, were found to inhibit cells from being infected by coronavirus.
Interesting, 2 antineoplastic drugs in combo. Unfortunately, (and with no knowledge of this myself) I would have to think if these have antineoplastic effects, I would guess that use as antivirals would entail some significant side effects. But again, I am not an oncology researcher and have no personal knowledge of this. Interesting days, indeed.
