Continuing coronavirus happenings (Part 4)

Anti-Mask Protesters in COVID-Ravaged LA

I wish they’d spell out “Louisiana” or “Los Angeles”

I think it’s widely understood that China hasn’t been forthcoming with honest data regarding covid cases within their borders, but the data analysis done by Forbes tells one hell of a tale:

The ratio of their excess deaths compared to official covid cases is orders of magnitude higher than in other countries. It’s hard to imagine any explanation short of a huge coverup.

The comparisons with other countries like New Zealand is pretty compelling as well. I recommend reading the whole article.

Survivors of Australia’s insane Covid-19 testing queues

We chatted yesterday with a friend in a large :australia: city. COVID is everywhere in her group, everyone self isolating now just in case, but can’t access supports because that requires a PCR test which requires hours of queuing, and queuing with people who are just as likely to guarantee you a positive test as not. RAT’s basically unavailable or only at extortionate prices. A NYE gathering is to blame, negative RAT’s notwithstanding, and a renter in the house, who had the initial positive test, is not behaving appropriately.

FTR, taking my response to your post to the other thread would be wrong.

I am not tired of watching this specific exchange. This is far to important.

FFP2/KN95 work, and we should use them whenever we meet people indoors. There is solid evidence for this, and we can of course collect it in another topic.

It’s not all doom and gloom.

And it will immediately go back down the shitter again, when people start opening up, stop wearing masks, and a new variant emerges.

How many times have we done this little dance and how many times have we been hit by yet another surge?

A little optimism doesn’t hurt and the article pointed out there were possible curve balls ahead.

I need to believe this doesn’t go on forever, sorry.

Sure, but given how this has gone so far, I’d argue it’s not warranted in this case.

This is far more likely an outcome on the pandemic ending…

I know it sucks. We all agree, but I don’t believe false hope is really helpful.

The video looks intriguing, but it’s 17 minutes I ain’t got right now.

Would you mind summarizing the gist of N. Christakis’ negative commentary?

It’s worse than that. It’s how we got folks reopening as soon as the delta wave started breaking, and the refusal to react to the omicron wave. At this point, any response is viewed through a very jaundiced lens, and I am hearing more and more “just live with it, only the weak die.” As though Long Covid did not exist.

Right? NPR, CNN, etc, they all had the same kind of stories… which, I understand, right? We all want out… but these sorts of stories aren’t “getting out”, I’m afraid they’re giving us some false hope. I’d love for it to be true… but I’m gonna be cautious here.

I failed. Too fatigued to write the makeup exam. What can you do? :man_shrugging:

Our turn…

I find myself missing that part of the New Year which is usually far more optimistic. In our household we’re kind of missing “the next thing to look forward to” and it’s a little hard. Less so for acknowledging it.
