So many places this could go. Misogyny, Unions, Fuck Today. But since covid is the motivating force, I will put it here.

Nursing shortage, crisis in healthcare, apparently the answer is to cap nurses’ salaries. Because, they don’t matter, I guess. Speaking as someone whose daily function relies entirely on my nurses knowing exactly what needs to be done and doing it properly, they get paid shit wages! I am not a nurse, but this gets me way too fired up for my own well being. Fuck every asshat who would support this, or even think this is a good idea.

the daughter of a close friend of ours is a nurse, she’s an rn with a master’s of nursing. she had the opportunity to move into administration at a large elder care facility (800+ residents in skilled nursing, 500 in assisted living). her registered nurses make $35-49k/ year, her licensed vocational nurses make $12.50-15.00/hr, and nurse’s aides make $7.25-8.50/hr. her hourly employees have their hours strictly controlled so as to keep overtime down to a minimum. she makes a six figure salary which she has intimated is between $150,000-200,000. because she is the “director of nursing” she is the lowest paid “director” in the facility. she claims, and i believe her, that the p.r. director gets $500,000, the nutrition director gets over $300,000, and the h.r. director get close to $800,000. these are actually very good wages for nursing in texas but even in a high paying environment one can see the way priorities get set.

Stacey Abrams is perhaps the individual who has done more than any other single person to help win both the White House and the Senate for Democrats, ending the nightmare of the Trump administration, and we all owe her a huge debt of gratitude. So I’m a big fan of hers and will tend to cut her some slack.

That said, I have to wonder what she was thinking here. The reaction from her detractors when she posed maskless for this photo and posted it on Twitter was 1000% predictable, and the thing is they’re not entirely wrong. Most of us would probably be critical of, say, a Republican Governor posing for a similar maskless photo inside a school where masks are mandatory. Any smart politician (and she is very smart) would have known exactly how this would go down. Why didn’t she at least step outdoors with the class for this photo?

She took it off for the shot and to talk over zoom to kids not there in person.

Once again, the GOP howls at a tiny misstep when they are promoting policies that are literally killing people.

Yes, which is explicitly against the masking rules there. So she should have known how that would be received. The fact that she tweeted the photo then deleted it suggests to me that she didn’t anticipate this reaction, but maybe she did and she’s playing some 9th dimensional chess that’s just way over my head.

Sure. I guess. whatever.

Sorry, but momentarily taking a mask off for a photo is a nothingburger.

As for GQP outrage, how would we even notice? Did they pause their incoherent ranting about Stacy Abrams existing to incoherently rant about the photo? The poor babies.

Yeah, no.

In case of masking, don’t give a shit about the US domestic politics and partisan opinions.

Two years in a pandemic, taking off your mask in a public appearance is not a good idea. I often see European politicians do this, and I do not give them a pass for any of the occurrences.

In a situation with children present, I would start shouting at my own partner if they did that.

That said, fuck everyone who is trying to use such a situation for their own political agenda.

"We do not have sufficient resources to adequately and effectively address this situation,” the Ottawa police chief said Saturday.

different country i know but this sounds so suspect

in the us, black lives demonstrations sometimes got targeted by both police and sheriffs pulled from multiple counties, the national guard, seas of tear gas, “non lethal” weapons

if you need to block off streets, establish and enforce curfews, or declare a riot
“resources” have never stopped the authorities before

We never really did the thing where barely surplus military equipment got handed out to police. Heavy handed action at the G20 protests in Toronto in 2010 also backfired. Nobody is looking for a repeat of either that or, really, a repeat of the military response to the FLQ crisis or the Oka crisis.

I tend to agree that the time has come for some cold-war style propaganda efforts “smarter communications strategies”, though. When your society is being picked away from inside by foreign influences you need to have a counter strategy. We have enough of our own troubles

Edit: Good line from the judge in this case

“Tooting a horn is not an expression of any great thought I’m aware of,” said Justice Hugh McLean during a court hearing in Ottawa Monday.

Same shit as when RWNJ groups come to Portland. Suddenly, the police are terribly concerned about the 1A and there are no resources.

yeah, it’s just - like @DukeTrout says about portland - this only seems to be a concern during right wing protests ( though i don’t know enough about the flq to know how to categorize it. )

this is from just last month:

https://www.msn.com/en-ca/news/other/national-outcry/ar-AASN3vk

Responding to a 2019 British Columbia Supreme Court injunction, RCMP officers have arrested over 30 Wet’suwet’en community members, supporters and even journalists in BC in the past few weeks. This action has led to protests across the country in support of the Wet’suwet’en and their efforts to block a fossil-fuel pipeline from entering their territory.

Not sure Texas can do this? Well, at least not sure how they could do this before Amy Coney Barrett was appointed. Sigh.
