For all the “real Texans” on this thread, this one’s for you:
You could try cobbling something together yourself while you wait.
I’m surprised no one appears to have linked this yet…
As Volkswagen proved to the world with their emissions cheating scandal, it’s not hard to design a system that can pass a smog check then still have your car running dirty the rest of the time. If certification of emissions systems wasn’t required I imagine there would be a lot of business for aftermarket kits that could boost your car’s power (and pollution) but still pass the test when it’s time for a smog check. And such systems wouldn’t even be illegal.
Time for the statutory reminder that it was not just Volkswagen’s “emissions cheating scandal”.
Is there a major manufacturer who hasn’t been found/admitted to have done the same
thing?
According to RationalWiki he’s moved back towards debunking nonsense than being a culture warrior, apparently motivated by the reaction to Brexit and Trump’s election with his fellows in antifeminism (and Carl Benjamin’s fans turning on him after the pair debated the pros and cons of Brexit in the lead-in to the referendum). But it looks like he hasn’t actually improved as a person and is still a drama monarch. Just aimed at different people.
Well I just googled it and it looks hideous as all hell. Certainly not humdrum
…and he is all hat, no cattle.
[I also like the UK analogue: “He’s all mouth and no trousers.”]
So did the Aztek, at the time. That’s the point.
That’s what I was saying. I googled the Aztek and found it hideous and not at all humdrum in hindsight, as you were implying. I had never seen it before, if that makes a difference.
Oh I see; sorry, I misunderstood. It was much worse when it was new, in my experience. I think it’s because a number of design elements that were unique at the time have been mainstreamed. Obviously, not only YMMV but YMDV.
I mean, I don’t think it’s ever going to read as a good-looking car.
LOL they put on side mirrors at the last second cause I’m sure even with the more neo-lib approach at the federal level for cars there’s no way they’d approve it for public road use without them. Especially since so many other cars have side mirrors and thus the average American driver will expect them at the very least, whether or not they use them is another matter.
Yeah, he’s pretty much explicitly suggesting that owners remove these legally-required safety devices after receiving their trucks. One of his tweets from last year said
Seriously, what the fuck.
Her channel is amazing
Roughly on topic, this popped up in my feed recently.
If anyone wants a retail EV truck that isn’t the ugliest thing in existence
(Rivian R1T)
Exactly! They do both because both are required.
Furthermore, emissions cannot be tested in all real world conditions. The tests (until recently*) were done at idle because that’s the only practical way to do it. They can’t rest heavy traffic conditions on a hot day, or freeway speeds, or pulling a trailer, or all sorts of other conditions were emissions vary dramatically. They have to approximate these other things by regulating the equipment on the cars and measuring the results at scale over time.
@bleacherbum, vehicle emissions are complicated. “Just test them all” is easy for you to say, but would be extremely difficult and ineffective in practice. Before presuming experts in a field are dumb, it would be good to learn about that field and speak from a position of humility. Consider that smart people who work on this problem for a living might know what they are doing.
*latest testing on newer cars is done entirely by a data dump from the computer now. OBD logging standards are rigorous enough that emissions can be read from there without the tail pipe sniffer in many cases
I get why people don’t like the idea of driving a minivan, but other than the gas mileage, I love my minivan. But I am a SAHM, AKA the intended audience. In less than 5 minutes I can have a car that seats 7 (I mean, 6 comfortably, 7 nice and cozy) or a car with enough cargo space to buy a absolute crapton of furniture from the thrift store to refinish. There’s enough space between my kids that they don’t fight the entire car ride. There is room for my dog.
Plus a minivan is perfect for those planetary excursions where it’s unsafe or impractical to use the molecular transporter.
Didn’t say they were dumb. Said (or meant to say) that the OEM’s maybe had too many seats at the table when this policy was crafted.
