I know that he had some struggles with alcohol, which he seems to have under control, but given the scope of his celebrity it really is a credit to him that he seems very together now and he makes role choice that I absolutely love. I will watch just about anything he is in knowing that it will be both good and weird in a way that I enjoy.

When he went for some six months wearing the same outfit whenever he’d go out so that paps couldn’t get usable picture of him, I knew he would be ok.

Good for him, seriously.

That’s kinda brilliant.

The most surprising part of that franchise isn’t that the kid who played Harry Potter managed to have a relatively healthy upbringing.

The most surprising part is that the kid who played Neville Longbottom grew up to be the hot one.

He almost pulled a Jerry O’Connell:

Life imitates art! For me, Neville’s journey as a character is one of the best in the whole series.

By his own words, it sounds more like he had good parents. That seems a lot more important than whether or not he went to Hollywood.

He resisted both the LA and Rowling taints? Chosen one indeed.

Iconic glow-up.

Why did they care? I would have guessed they’d take lots of pictures and the tabloids would write “he’s let himself go! Unrecognizable!”

or “OCD Potter wears his lucky outfit again!!”

I’m assuming it’s because when all the pictures look the same there is no novelty in them. They could have all been taken on the same day, making them hard to sell to tabloids, and hard to use to sell tabloids.

I like how he made so much money, that he can more or less just do roles he finds interesting. Like Guns Akimbo and Swiss Army Man.

I liked it when he played a (sad, desperate) version of himself as a guest star on Extras.. I don’t think that a successful actor would take on a self-deprecating role like that for any reason other than for fun.

Back when I was a teenager I was briefly acquainted with a child star who’d just finished the run of his show. While he didn’t fall into drugs and alcohol like his slightly older co-stars, it became immediately apparent that the guy had been given zero opportunities for interaction with normal kids his own age for most of his life.

He was a fundamentally nice kid who desperately wanted friends or a girlfriend, but he just couldn’t connect with anyone his own age. It was clear that adults were not looking out for him when he’d been working except to make sure that he didn’t put the show he starred on at risk. Worst of all were his parents, who actively and brazenly stole most of the money he earned and lived high on the hog while allowing him the occasional cheap (compared to the luxuries they were enjoying) toy. I still get angry thinking about that kid.

In contrast, Radcliffe emerged somewhat intact from the predatory environment of the entertainment industry (which is a constant whether or not you’re in L.A.) because his parents kept an eye on him, encouraged him to socialise with his age peers outside the industry and didn’t exploit him.
