I find that interesting because I was sure that like other ‘blockbuster’ celeb filled musicals (ie Les Misérables) it was more of a showcase for Hollywood who’s who (and 𝐽𝑎𝑠𝑜𝑛 𝐷𝑒𝑟𝑢𝑙𝑜) to look cultured and win awards.
Oh fuck, I’d forgotten about that. Hooper needs to make a film adaptation of Starlight Express, but with CGI train-people. That would stop people talking about what a trainwreck (ha!) Cats apparently is.
Hey, Johnny Mnemonic has its qualities. I rewatch it every few years.
Hints:
Don’t take it seriously AT ALL (it clearly doesn’t take itself seriously), appreciate the kind of amazing cast, Keanu’s rant atop the garbage pile, the decent CG and effects, soundtrack, and remember that the script was actually written by Gibson. OK I won’t lie, I kind of love Johnny Mnemonic.
I’m in Shanghai right now (can’t believe bb works without a VPN?!) and let me say, in 2020, this place IS the cyberpunk future, and the movie did a decent job visualizing that.
I’ve wanted to see Starlight Express for years, the musical just sounds so wild and crazy (and terrible).
The Final Programme is my go-to weird film for annoying people.
The thing is with The Final Progamme. The movie is actually pretty faithful to the source material. The Jerry Cornelius books are some fucked up trippy stuff.
