Based on the headline, you might suppose the poor child was with the suspect in the car being chased.
Or you might know enough about the police to realize that they killed a bystander (and put another in the hospital) who had nothing to do with anything, they just happened to be in the way while the police were making life-threatening decisions.
Two big defund-relevant articles today:
Portland Police are still under a consent decree from the DoJ. Unlike many pilice departments in the US, this one wasn’t about brutality and violence against BIPOC (though there’s plenty of that); it is about brutality against people with mental illness.
The other one outlines how PPB and the City of Portland has failed to make progress in 7 months on the investigation of a bigoted and pro-violence slide that was included in a training slide during the George Floyd protests.
They are dragging their feet on every aspect of the settlement with DoJ. At some point, the city just needs to dissolve the PPB and ask the state to fill the gap while a whole new structure and force is established.
Who knows, they might get along better without 'em…
Might?
Seems like the best solution possible, in the circumstances.
Mayor James Latimer stated the officers have been suspended with pay during Thursday’s city council meeting, and that the council has approved a resolution to terminate the police chief and the assistant police chief
ahg! with pay!?
im glad someone’s getting fired but still.
Yeah, they still have to deal with the union…getting sued would probably cost a lot more.
They don’t want public trust, they want to control the public (and their departments, local officials, etc.):
Methinks they fired the wrong officer…
