Defund the police?

A cop raped a crime scene tech he’d invited over for drinks. After 16 months they finally tested the rape kit and charged him. Of course he’s still on the job, getting paid by a broke city that constantly complains about not having enough funding to hire cops.

Her rape examination kit became mired in a backlog of more than 73,000 samples at the Louisiana State Police crime laboratory.

For scale, 73000 is 1.6% of the population of Louisiana. That is the fucking backlog of untested kits. Defund, decimate, and replace with something that respects humanity

This is dated 2021 but I lack confidence in the accuracy of the LEO-reported numbers of untested kits cited:

… at the link the overview says “The Joyful Heart Foundation is a leader in the efforts to eliminate America’s current backlog.” So that site of theirs has a map to view the current situation of unprocessed rape kits, by state:

https://www.endthebacklog.org/

Here’s another organizing also working to end the backlog of unprocessed rape kits:

The fact that such organizations exist to address the failure of LEO to do their job and see to it that the kits are processed and rapists are held accountable is reprehensible, pathetic, and entirely predictable.

Out of every 1,000 sexual assaults, only five of the perpetrators will ever see the inside of a jail or prison cell.

Only about one in four rape victims come forward to make a police report, with the hope that the perpetrator will be caught and prosecuted. Of them, one in five of those cases will lead to an actual arrest, and of that group, one in five arrests are referred to prosecution. In the end, less than 0.5 percent of sexual assaults lead to justice for survivors.

As a society patriarchy, we wave off these low conviction rates as cold cases, but often, the victim’s rape kit was never tested in the first place.

According to the Joyful Heart Foundation’s “End the Backlog” team, there is a backlog of untested rape kits in the hundreds of thousands that are sitting in police and crime lab storage facilities across the country.

An abandoned Detroit warehouse that was once used by the police department to store evidence provides a perfect example of the negligence that rape kits are treated with. In 2009, the deputy chief of the special victims unit in Detroit visited the property and discovered piles of black garbage bags and emptied oil drums filled with 11,341 abandoned rape kits, some of them dating back to rapes from the 1980s—all of them untested. …

“Why” indeed.

And of course, the police themselves get off without a scratch. :man_shrugging:

Here’s a great example of how CNN, that seemingly stalwart news outlet, is shifting to the right, thanks to its recent takeover by some fascist billionaire.

We really have our counterprogramming work cut out for us if this increasingly rightwing alternative to Fox News continues to represent for most USians “the liberal media.” :expressionless:

Out of all the people who endure shitty jobs in America, cops are the only ones who regularly whine about their own “morale”

That’s because they think they’re an army, of course. Nobody cares about the morale of “civilians”.

“was beaten to death”

Well, yes.

Because it is standard procedure for police to be trained how to beat people to death.

Obviously.
