Democrat Doug Jones beats cowboy cosplay creep Roy Moore in Alabama senate race

Wait, this happened? I need to see this.

40% Thank you Alabama for once again proving that high voter turnout is a boon to Democrats and low voter turnout benefits Republicans.

If anything this does to show that minorities have a stronger voice. In a state typically held by white politicians i hope that this result will encourage blacks and other minorities to take their elected representatives to task rather than feel hopeless that it’s all business as usual.

I hope it will also encourage politicians to start thinking about black people and other minorities as one of the most important primary considerations when shaping their platforms instead of as a last-minute strategic afterthought when it comes to getting out the vote.

I don’t know… he was pretty threatening to the KKK.

This post demonstrates one of the big issues with Democrats. Who is responsible? Should minority voters vote for the best available Democrat? Or should they stay home if a Democrat doesn’t seem to take their interests into account sufficiently?
It’s tricky, and I don’t have a good answer. But if anyone asked for my advice (and why should they), I’d say the importance of the race should be part of the equation. And maybe use the “stay home unless they talk about me enough” is more appropriate for primaries.

To be honest i typically don’t vote, while i agree its stupid that i don’t i generally feel that all the candidates for any given election are hot garbage. I can imagine other voters feel equally disillusioned that their votes don’t matter.

To your point though, the solution is likely to be more vocal about what kind of candidates we want otherwise the politicians that rise to the top will be exactly the type we won’t want to elect. No shit right? But with the way politics work it’s hard to want to be engaged in something that’s so frustrating and often times downright infuriating.

My post wasn’t about advising what minorities about what they should be doing. It was about advising politicians (and in particular, Democratic politicians) on what they should be doing.

It’s interesting how the media keeps framing these questions in ways that saddle minority voters with all the responsibility for election outcomes. There were countless pundits opining on how “minority voters could stop Moore!” Know what ELSE could have stopped Moore? White voters refusing to back a pedophile.

Or that neither candidate is a “good” choice. Like choosing between death by hanging for firing squad - can I just get one that doesn’t involve death?

This was the attitude of George Carlin. While I don’t totally agree, it’s still a good point.

Judging the by breakdown of the voting results it seems that the only way things turned out the way they did was because minorities took matters into their own hands to stop that creep from being elected. Seems like white voters were quite set on electing him regardless, if i had to hazard a guess them sticking to their vote was likely one of loyalty to the party than a vote of conscience or voting for the “best” candidate.

Agreed, and they deserve credit for that, but had Jones lost much of the media would be talking about why minorities didn’t turn out in numbers high enough to protect their best interests instead of why white voters in Alabama are so fucking monstrous.

I think anyone in Alabama who feels their votes don’t really matter is looking at the insanely slim margins this morning and realizing that every vote absolutely matters.

And i’m fully aware of such a thing, every vote matters regardless of what election we’re talking about. To me i think it has to do with my disillusion with US politics, it’s hard for me to care when i consistently see the things i care about not be represented. The closest i got to caring was Bernie but then Hilary happened…

Yeah, because HRC would have done all the horrible things trump is in the midst of doing. There IS a difference between candidates. Much of what HRC was accused of has been due to decades of lies and personal smear attacks by the right wing. Remember the phrase ‘vast right wing conspiracy’? In her case it was most definitely true. She was far and away the most highly qualified candidate to be POTUS. My, how things would have been different if she were elected.

It’s good that sanity prevailed in Alabama yesterday, but really, Jones won by less 2% of the vote. This means that almost 0.5 million people voted for the creep. Is that a victory? Maybe, but there’s still a lot of work to be done.

My gripe is between Bernie vs Hilary. Between those two Bernie was the better candidate, and it’s been shown how much corruption and backdealing Hilary engaged in to ensure that she won her nomination. THATS why i was disillusioned. Sure Hilary would have been better than Trump, but again i don’t want to pick the least worst option, i want to pick a good candidate.
