Much longer than a few years. Think Palin, and well before. Basically, the isolation and need to feel wildly independent from the lower 48 (and society in general), spawns some real nasty behavior from them snow cowboys!

I was once trapped ina dentist chair having a root canal by a dentist who paused drilling goddamn holes in my face to light a cigarette.
(he was subsequently struck off, but I have several friends who also had horror stories about him. I no longer have that particular tooth)
