Reminds me exactly, right down to the tone, of how they constantly, endlessly, every minute of every hour would talk about the Clinton emails regardless if there was anything to discuss or not.

If Rosenstein resigned, Trump could invoke the Vacancies Act to install his successor (without needing congressional approval). If he were sacked, normal succession applies.

It could also be an old school trick to find a leaker (i.e. feeding someone false but juicy news to see if it turns up externally).
