I mean, there’s loads of reasons to not to want to get whacked with one, but it’s not one that would be deadly without some extreme skill, luck or effort, or possibly a combo.

Cops have been known to shoot empty-handed naked suspects rather than tackle them, so presumably they view “swinging pipe” as a deadly weapon.
