I saw it in a Tijuana theater today. Not as much cheering, though there was some murmuring, and a little applause when Diana finally kissed Steve in the inn.
I teared up and got a lump in my throat for sure during the most heroic parts, when she was making a stand and discovering her true self.
I went to see last evening &it was pretty great. I’ll definitely be going again- likely buying. It’s your great comic book movie- origin story - hero’s journey of self discovery and coming into her power- saving the world. But also more complicated as evil exists outside of just the big bad.
I have to wonder how a film about a woman hero - coming from an island of women to our world in 1916 or so could possibly exist without any social commentary about the status of women. Or even today. It would be like having a film set during potato famine and ignoring it wasn’t the water those characters swam in. You know Spartacus would be a great film if they didn’t mention slavery- no way for that to be an exciting action flick.
I also don’t see how you un-social commentary a film about someone envisioned from the inception as a feminist icon. That’s who she is. Just as Steve Rogers is an anti Nazi who fights for the little guy. Maybe there’s some other fear going on.
Spoilers follow- though how they could be spoilers given it’s an island of only women for thousands of years, I have no idea.
"Steve: Where I come from, babies are made differently.
Diana: You refer to reproductive biology.
Steve: Yes.
Diana: Yeah, I know. I know all about that.
Steve: I refer to that … and other things.
Diana: The pleasures of the flesh?
Steve: Do you know about … that?
Diana: I’ve read all 12 volumes of Cleo’s treatises on pleasure.
Steve: All 12, huh?
Diana: Mm-hm.
Steve: Did you bring any of those with you?
Diana: You would not enjoy them.
Steve: I don’t know … maybe.
Diana: No, you wouldn’t.
Steve: Why not?
Diana: They came to the conclusion that men are essential for procreation but, when it comes to pleasure [sigh] … unnecessary."
I said to friends this is a movie made by women for all the little girls we used to be who were told we couldn’t play with the boys. Its quietly revolutionary. And I love it.
Whining wasn’t his super power
Ugh no. Just no. “truth, justice, and the American way” aside, in fact the three pillars of Judaism are:
- Torah
- Service of God
- acts of human kindness
It’s true that if you like comic books you can thank us Jews but we’ve pretty much kept or religious aspects out of them.
All 5 writers of this film are men.
Sheesh, this thread. Did some kind of general Man Alert go out?
Hey guys, the wimmens are having too much fun over there, and they’re getting uppity too. Time to go piss on their parade!
The director is Patty Jenkins.
A woman.
And it shows.
Imma say it again: go see it. Its excellent.
You do realize how whiny that came off?
I’m not sure that if gays stop mentioning homophobia and that they exist it makes homophobia go away.
At least it hasn’t worked yet.
Pointing out inequality is apparently divisive and as bad as actually being prejudiced and creating inequalities. Didnt you know that?
Whatevs.
Imma go see Wonder Woman again.
The only sexists left these days are women whining about sexism! You know, the ugly ones. Neener!
Denial sure as hell hasn’t worked for making racism go away, either.
Weird, huh?
Damn! I thought for sure we cracked the code.
But - lowering taxes still increases tax revenue, right?
It’s a string of false equivalence. By all means. Continue.
Just as sure as discussing such urgent , life-altering topics as comic book protagonists and movies will always bring out the best in everyone, and no one will ever get all butthurt behind such conversations.
I remember that the best reaction in all the media I’ve looked at was in fact the piece The Onion had, of all places. Unlikely, but true. Do a web search. Sincere, respectful of the victims, but not without humour in a good and appropiate way.
I’ll just leave this here for your consideration:
Do you mean the woman who baked the American flag cake because she couldn’t think what else to do? That was gold.
I can do this all day - apologies to Steve Rogers
I’m waiting until the matinee show tomorrow when it’s slightly cheaper, but I’m totes taking Girlizmatic (my daughter.)
