Director of Wonder Woman on why the word "cheesy" is banned from her world

I firmly believe a major source of visual inspiration for WW came from rainfall’s short film from 2013. If I am correct. It was an excellent decision.

A great film for the Matic woman! Nice to have something both can enjoy.

We go see all the good comic book flicks, because I am, at heart, a pop art nerd.

But yeah; it’s nice to have a female main protagonist this time around.

Even more so for me, as a life-long fan of WW (long live Lynda Carter!) who has been waiting for HER own movie ever since the comic book film franchise first got such a revival.

Did they give Lynda Carter a cameo? That would have been a nice gesture. I think that’s a factor in the “I want my comic book movies to be fun, not political” impulse- I liked the 70s Wonder Woman show (and The Secrets of Isis!), and sometimes you just want to experience things like a kid again, just pure good vs. evil without drilling down into exactly which is what. But I guess as an adult you can’t really unknow what you know, so there it is.

That would make my freakin’ day if they did.

NO SPOILERS, PLEASE!

Real talk.

The reality is that our nostalgia goggles are often just deep-seated pining for a time that only seemed simpler, because our minds and bodies were so much younger, fresher and less jaded by the disappointments and mundanity of life.

Sadly many things I adored growing up haven’t held up very well when I go to revisit them as an adult.

Perfect example:

The original Fright Night.

In 1985, it was a wicked cool horror flick that had me side-eyeing my new neighbors for months.

But in 2015, when I tried to check it out again for old times sake, it was painfully cheesy.

I don’t know. Right from 70s Wonder Woman, Isis (love!), Uhura in Star Trek: I wanted woman super heroes (though I lined the men ones too), and it was really, really obvious my options were more limited in that regard.

Then there were all the fights with adult relatives who were happy to buy me comics as a treat but kept telling me milquetoast stuff like Richie Rich was proper “for girls” stuff and I really shouldn’t be into superheroes.

It is such a privilege to buy a ticket on my phone, walk into the theatre, and watch a film without anyone telling me I don’t belong there.

I didn’t think much of that one at the time. (Although, by definition, any movie which features Roddy McDowell is automatically cool, at least in part.)

But what of House?

Ah, House.

Another old horror fav which I revisited sometime well before my kid was born.

Also didn’t hold up as well as my memory said it should, but I’ll always have a soft spot for that offbeat flick.

I had two options, and I guess I should be grateful I had them both: Wonder Woman or Super Girl underoos when they came out. They did later offer Bat Girl, but, alas, at that point, I was too old.

I watched Helen Slater in Super Girl (not a good movie) and then the inconsequential Alicia Silverstone as Bat Girl.

I have been waiting for this movie since I was 8. I wonder how many men can say the same about their super heroes?

“Limited” – indeed, that’s one way to put it.

Granted, my heroes had their shot three years before I was born. No waiting.

It’s not to late. They have those in adult sizes at several places.

Now if I can only find them in sizes to fit adult men!

I vividly recall watching Lynda Carter as Wonder Woman; she was my hero. I’d put cardboard cuffs on and pretend to deflect bullets while swirling around a length of rope as a lasso. My dad drew the line at me dressing like her for Halloween, however; he was uncomfortable enough with his 5 year old son acting like Wonder Woman around the house. Did they give Lynda Carter a cameo?

No; personally I would’ve cast her as the Queen of the Amazons, but that didn’t happen. However, she was credited with “Special Thanks”, and has been present for a lot of PR for the movie, so she was definitely involved quite a bit. Possibly she chose not to appear, or they thought it’d simply be too distracting; this is a very non-cheesy non-pop-culture-referencing movie.

I saw the movie with a packed house yesterday. When she said that line, there were immediate female whoops and yeahs!! throughout the audience and a lot of laughter, while the guy next to me (with his girlfriend) squirmed.

Holy wow.

The perfect thing for my next family beach vacation. “Say, dad, remember when you didn’t want me wearing a Wonder Woman costume as a kid?”

One never knows - he might already own a pair.

It wouldn’t be the first time I saw that dynamic.

I saw it. With guys, but there were a lot of women in the crowd. No shrieking, but people seemed to like it.

I really liked it. Solid story. Really good action scenes and effects. Good character development. It was a bit long, but didn’t seem that long. I did figure out the plot as it went, but that’s ok. I’d rather have some predictably vs something that doesn’t make sense. Gadot was a perfect choice in all respects and did the character justice. Nice to see Spud from Trainspotting get a bit role. I wish the costume was a little more brighter and colorful, but that is my wish for pretty much every superhero movie. DC is more guilty of muting the color and joy than Marvel.

My one nitpick was Ares. I called it who was really Ares, and the character as the minister made sense. But when he revealed himself and certainly in the flash back he shouldn’t be some goofy looking older British guy with a mustache. I can’t recall ever even seeing a Greek/Roman statue of a god with a mustache. Once revealed he should have morphed into his true form and been much more godlike, instead it looked like a guy cosplaying a god.

I will have to get the DVD just so I can record the scene where she breathlessly says my name

My 75 year old dad in Wonder Woman crossdress (with Sissy Pouch!) is a terrifying thought. But I’m not gonna be the one to ask!

I have to admit, I appreciated that they didn’t CG-morph him into a hyper muscled Greek god with the voice of David Thewlis, which is what I expected. Seeing him in his war armor with his British mustache was weird, unexpected, and made me grin.

I would assume it’s typical of a man. For example, socks with sandals, fanny packs, Crocs, and Trilby hats. :smirk:
