Doorbell video records woman saving her kids from two vicious dogs with seconds to spare

Who let the dogs out?

Too soon.

Absolutely. My boxer is friendly as can be but I never know what’s going on in his head. Our dog daycare uses him to help acclimate aggressive dogs and I’d never let him off the leash in our neighborhood. At the very least, he can injure a child by being too friendly.

OT, but I re-watched that pretty recently, and man, that’s a great movie. Wil Wheaton was great in it, as was River Phoenix. I had forgotten how much they all curse in it… :grimacing:

I’ve literally been bitten by a dog, in front of the owner, and the owner quickly says “Oh, he doesn’t bite.”

That was not friendly behavior.

Also, thank God for Ring™ Video Doorbell and the whole range of wonderful, life-saving products and accessories available from http://ring.com. Safer neighborhoods, together. So true.

The only thing I would recommend is a proper home DVR + PoE cameras setup, and I might just do that this weekend! You shouldn’t depend on corporate cloud services like all these Ring/Arlo type gadgets do, but you should have online storage somewhere footage gets immediately and irrevocably duplicated to.

We had neighbors who did that. There are plenty of pets, people who take walks, and small children here, so that is more than unacceptable. I called animal control or 911 every time. After a few times of having to deal with AC and/or cops, the neighbors got rid of the pit bull 'steada becoming good doggy parents. No one missed them when they finally moved away!

Whoever “owns” those two needs to be slapped with a financially crippling fine and get their dogs taken away from them. Any kids they have (God forbid) probably should be with CPS, given how irresponsible their parents are, and those dogs are obviously a danger to life and limb.

Yeah, hackles up does not mean, “I very much enjoy play. Would you care to indulge me?”

I agree 100%. Unfortunately, it’s become very difficult to buy those systems in the U.S.

Nearly all of the recorders and cameras were made by three manufacturers in China. In 2019, the National Defense Authorization Act prohibited the federal government and military from purchasing or using equipment from those manufacturers.

Then in 2021, the FCC decided to stop issuing licenses for surveillance equipment from these manufacturers and to prohibit firmware updates for older devices. That left almost no recorder + PoE camera systems on the market. Ones that are already installed are becoming obsolete without updates (not that these companies were ever any good at providing updates).

I’m not sure how/why Costco continues to sell Lorex systems, but that’s the last of these systems I’ve been able to find available. You can find lots of online offers for the other brands, sometimes at crazy low prices, but nobody has any in stock anymore. Some brands are simply extinct. Others have pivoted to offering only “smart” WiFi cameras.

I’m not saying the ban is wrong, but it is unfortunate that it has all but eliminated the category of security camera systems that best fit the needs of many consumers and small businesses.

Every time I see a dog off leash in my neighborhood I tell the people with it that city law requires all animals to be leashed if off private, enclosed property. Mostly they then yell insults about my highly excited dog, who is on a leash. One even told me I had no rights to be walking my dog in that block because they had never seen me before. Only been walking my dogs there for 50 years now…

Having recently re-read Reamde I am inclined to agree.

@aidtopia Thanks for the tip about Costco. Useful. Planning to go there soon for a resupply.
