I had friends who used to do Civil War re-enactments. They explained that most people don’t (well, DIDN’T…this was back in the 1980’s) want to play Confederate soldiers, so newbies were assigned those roles. It was very clear that most people stuck it out specifically to get the right to be Union soldiers after a time, whereas there was a small contingent who wanted to stay Confederates even when they didn’t have to anymore.
If he is (willfully?) unaware that Confederate soldiers were NOT, by definition, U.S. soldiers, so their uniforms do not belong in a photo of U.S. military uniforms over the years, then his incompetence has been hiding in plain sight for a while there at the War College.

Edit: guess I misunderstood. This is a special election, not a primary. So the results will be tallied with no additional voting. Right now the Democrat Mary Peltola is ahead but when the ranked-choice votes from some other candidates are redistributed she might fall behind.
