Elections 2023 and 2024 (Part 1)

Who was more concerned about the state of his shoes than any of the meat shields or minions around him.

IMHO I don’t believe that the attack garnered much sympathy for Mr. Bolsonaro, but I think it may have solidified the idea of "us" against “them”, which had already been carefully cultivated for decades. Perhaps it caused more damage to left-wing parties, which ultimately favored Mr. Bolsonaro’s candidacy.

Every time things get bad for the Bolsonarista troupe, memories of the attack were brought back, along with the almost pornographic photos of him at the hospital.

The slogan always used by Mr Bolsonaro supporters was “Who ordered Bolsonaro to be killed?” suggesting a sinister conspiracy. What they forget is that the Federal Police investigated the case and concluded that the perpetrator suffered from mental disorders and acted alone. To make matters worse for Bolsonarists, the victim himself was satisfied with the investigation and never appealed or questioned the result officially.

I read somewhere that several failed attacks in the United States during election campaigns ended up not favoring the victims. Some examples were Jimmy Carter and Lyndon Johnson.

5 months ago, Alex Jones and InfoWars guest Ivan Raiklin discussed how assassinating Trump would be beneficial, according to them, because it would lead to retaliatory “in kind” assassinations of a “deep state” list which includes President Joe Biden.

Ivan Raiklin: “If they [assassinate Trump], option 2, behind Trump, is going to be so much better for us and so much worse them.”

Alex Jones: “I was about as to say, If they kill him, that’s best case scenario from a sick level. From a sick level medium, ‘Oh, please kill him.’ I mean, it’s so good after that.”

Raiklin: “Oh, it’s going to be the best cleansing and the fastest cleansing that we’ve ever seen in my lifetime. I guaran—, I access, with almost certainty, with the highest level of confidence, that if they assassinate Trump, it is so game over for them.”

During the episode, Alex Jones played the guest’s “deep state target list” video which includes President Joe Biden, Speaker Hakeem Jeffries, former Vice President Mike Pence, and several current and former politicians and government officials, media members, and others.

we still don’t know that for sure. so far, we know he registered that way. but some people did that to vote for haley as a more moderate candidate – there are probably lots of possibilities on his motive still, including that it was an attempt to be “famous”

( eta: this part of the shooting is wild to me )

What about today, though?

I don’t think it convinced people to not vote for Biden.

Yeah, though I do think it convinced some to vote for Tromp (who’d grown disillusioned with him before the shooting). :person_shrugging:

Of course, it’s several months until the election. The people energized to vote for Trump have plenty of time to be disillusioned with him again, since we know for a fact he’s not going to stop being awful.

Indeed.

It really is too early to read the “likely voter turnout” tea leaves, with who knows what kinds of shock, awe and outrage lie ahead.

Not long before shots rang out, rallygoers noticed a man climbing to the roof of a nearby building and warned local police, according to two law enforcement officials.
One local police officer climbed to the roof and encountered Crooks, who pointed his rifle at the officer. The officer retreated down the ladder, and Crooks quickly took a shot toward Trump, and that’s when Secret Service snipers shot him, said the officials, who spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity to discuss an ongoing investigation.

That’s some fine police work, Lou.

We might be tempted to think that violence against one side must come from the other side. But the bloody genie, once unleashed, often stays close to home. Those who have made violence normal are especially vulnerable, because they will always have colleagues or followers who think they have not gone far enough.

In prime-time address, Biden warns of election-year rhetoric, saying ‘it’s time to cool it down’

The president acknowledged the passions of an election year, and that he and Republicans offer different policy visions, but implored Americans to “recommit” to resolving their differences peacefully.

And that’s how a president does it.

… I dunno, I don’t think the Republicans are going to cool anything down

No, they won’t. Not the point. This is how a president should respond to an event like this. Fascists will fash regardless.
