“I’m not, in candor, a fan of calling each other ‘weird’ or names, I don’t think that advanced American democracy,” the California US House representative said during a live event with the Guardian at the Texas Tribune festival Saturday in Austin. “I think we have to – in this country, and as a party – not just win, but deserve victory. And to deserve victory means to offer a vision that is going to bring this country together with a common purpose.”

So, it’s just fine for the GOP to LITERALLY call for rounding people up and eliminating entire groups from the US population, but democrats calling that shit out for what it is just goes too far…

he realized “it’s not fashionable anymore” to do as his fellow Democrat and former first lady Michelle Obama once said: “When they go low, we go high.” But he said former Democratic presidents like Barack Obama and John F Kennedy Jr “were inspirational figures and inspiration”, and he added: “I still think that wins for a nation that’s hungry for some kind of new common purpose.”

And lots of white people melted down after we had a Black President and elected a fascist in response… he seems to have forgotten that fact…

“I’m a classical liberal. I believe in free speech. I believe in persuasion. I believe that in this country you can still persuade people.”

For the most part, Democratic politicians are just calling Republican candidates like Trump and Vance weird, not Republican voters. And for the rest of us, I’m only calling the MAGA cult weird. Because it fucking is.

By the way, Liz Cheney called out Nikki Haley today for endorsing Trump after saying he was unqualified to be President during the primaries. She didn’t call her weird, but she did say “I can’t understand her position on this in any kind of a principled way.”

So how’s the persuading people been going, Khanna? Also, what exactly is “civic religion” that’s supposed to bring everyone together?

The Texas government is trying to trick you into thinking you’ve registered to vote online when that’s not possible.

It means “I’m a right-libertarian who wants to steal the word ‘liberal’ from the Left because they can’t be allowed to have anything, including words to describe themselves with”.

This is all opinion, but it seems to me like “liberal” has drifted into more of a centrist or center-left position. While they agree that changes are needed, they appear more or less okay with the status quo.

I can’t identify with “liberal” any more (even though I was one for much of my life), because I’ve become more aware of how the status quo “works” and how it’s been grossly influenced by systemic biases-- rascism, sexism, classism, etc. I feel like we need major upgrades to all our institutions, even if I’m not sure how to make it happen. That, to me, feels more like a leftist point of view.

But everyone has their own definitions of these terms, and I’ve still got a LOT to learn about politics and political theory. :woman_shrugging:

Well, mine of liberal versus leftist certainly accords with yours.

Of course, it depends on context too. I use “liberals” to describe those in the US who are fine with trying to fine-tune capitalism. Those I would describe as “leftists” think we’d be better off with well-run socialism, or if they’re further left, with well-run communism. Both of which would require, yes, major upgrades to all of our institutions.

In my experience, when Americans say “classical liberal” they mean what the rest of the world means with “liberal” and what Americans call “libertarian”.

Jill Stein Instagram Account caught liking comments telling supporters to vote Trump if not her

It’s actually shameful what these spoilers have become. They’re nothing more than another cog in the Russian propaganda scheme to get Trump elected. If this doesn’t show horseshoe theory is real idk what will.

When did the Green Party become libertarian? I say that because the only explanation I can come up with for why someone in the Green Party would claim that Democrats are waging a war on Democracy, especially in connection with Jill Stein, is that they’re anti-vaxxer COVID deniers who think the government shouldn’t be able to mandate that people do anything. And that’s a libertarian view. And it’s the polar opposite of who the Green Party used to be.
