[Solnit posted again a few paragraphs she wrote in July]

There is a strange and strangely popular maneuver whereby people surrender the power they actually have to claim a power they absolutely don’t. It’s in full force right now, and it’s having the impact of preemptive surrender.

These pseudo-prophets pretend they know the future, and with that pretense that the future is inevitable, they give up their power to participate in deciding that future. They claim a power they don’t have to surrender the power they have and try to convince you to surrender yours too. I have seen endless declarations of what the outcome of the November election will be, by people confusing being pickled in their own false certainty with real prophetic power.

The election is not up to the candidates and it doesn’t really rest on the caliber of the candidates. It’s up to voters, and on the one hand grassroots organizing and activism (including donations) to turn out the vote are crucial here. On the other, the media have lost their collective mind and are doing their best to get you to give up. The avalanche of baseless and biased stories going after Biden are themselves a form of campaigning on behalf of Trump and the triumph of authoritarianism. This election decides the fate of this country and maybe the end of this nation as it has existed for almost 250 years. The fate of the climate and much else rides on what happens in November. Portraying this election as about two personalities misses that what we elect is an administration and policies.

I don’t understand that.

Aren’t the republicans and trump encouraging their supporters to vote early using all methods available?

It is an accepted fact that Dems tend to vote by mail more often the Repubs. So, if you buy that, torching mail in ballots is a net gain for the fascists, I guess.

We could use a million, I’m trying to figure out the downside to entering the lottery.

Besides losing my soul and adding my name to every conservative list everywhere.

Yeah. I could, too. But every person that signs up is a little affirmation for Leon’s super-inflated ego, and I want no part of that. I’ll stick with the occasional powerball ticket.

Yep. And who knows whether a winner would actually ever get that million (or rather the 60% or whatever after taxes and such).

That’s a good point, going by his history. Maybe not actually paying people will be how he tries to weasel out of legal consequences.

A bit surprised only 18% have bought the MAGAt line about “Harris is the real Nazi.” That might speak to his actual base numbers.

Absolutely. It’s unfortunate that a few ballots slipped thru the cracks and got fraudulently counted but the fact that they were caught proves the system works and that mail in voting is extremely secure.

Mesa county is very deep red and they haven’t said for which party these votes were cast but odds are it was Republican candidates who were the beneficiaries of this fraud.
