Same in my area (Prince George’s Co., MD), with “Hogan for Senate.” Maybe apples & oranges, tho: I’m in a very blue county, & Hogan was a pretty popular governor, e.g. getting elected & re-elected in a blue state.
I haven’t been over there lately, but I wonder whether this lack of Trump signs is also true on the other side of the Chesapeake (or for that matter, the Patuxent). In 2016, the areas east of here were festooned with Trump signs.
We dropped off our ballots on Tuesday at the County Registrar of Voters office. There was a sheriff deputy parked about 50 ft from the ballot dropoff, which I’m sure has to do with all the arson issues. We got a text that our vote was “received and counted.”
Ya, it’s really stressful.
During the 2015 election season I had this constant, low-level anxiety stress for months. This time I seem to have avoided that, but then all those feelings came galloping at me all at once, instead.
It’s going to be a looong few weeks, I fear.
Here’s hoping we have cause for tears of joy instead of the other kind before too long.
I created a private sub reddit to carry over some of these discussions that can’t be replicated on Substack.
It’s completely private and I will only okay current users from here. I also wouldn’t mind a couple moderators if it gets busy but because it’s just us it should be okay for a while.
I would love to see this topic continued through at least next week just in case we need a place to scream.
There are a few long running topics we could start up over there but I’ll leave it to anybody that wants to play over there.
I’m not sure if it’s appropriate to post the link here so if anyone wants to try it out just DM me.
I’m still researching a small Discourse account but life is in the way right now so that will take a little longer then the couple days noticed we were given.
If the BB head honchos think this is inappropriate just let me know and I’ll delete it.
Hopefully we can meet over there at least temporarily until we see how Substack shakes out.
My understanding is that some places release stats on those voters who have had their votes received. Because they have to know who voted, and they can trivially look up the rest, like residence, age, registered party, sex, race; and they can or sometimes are forced to release those stats, even if they aren’t allowed to actually open the ballots yet.
So we don’t know what the results are, but it is possible to know how many 60+ white male registered Republicans in the county of Soggy Bottom voted.
Interesting. I’m mostly seeing the opposite around here, houses with Trump signs and no down ballot candidate signs. I guess that’s the dichotomy of the Republican party today, though–traditional Rs who can’t stand Trump (but will probably vote for him anyway) and the cultists who only care about him (and may or may not vote down ballot).
I know that the few homes that support Trump have full on cameras or doorbell cameras, which deters people from stealing signs. But even the crazy Trump supporter who lives less than a mile from our home has removed the bulk of his Trump paraphernalia. All he has on his driveway gate are two “Let’s go, Brandon” banners.
We were up in the Central California coast at the beginning of the month and we were very surprised that there were many more Harris signs vs. Trump signs. This part of the state has a lot of farmers, ranchers and retirees. A lot of people who own vacation homes are well-off Central Valley Californians, and they tend to vote red. Truly surprising to see.
Timothy Snyder’s essay The Strongman Fantasy goes into more detail about how authoritarian rule leads to a corrupt, partisan civil service and an economy that only benefits oligarchs close to the leader.
