Predictions that the hard and far right might get 150 out of 700 seats in the EU parliament.

A bad day for greens (I blame the greedflation crisis for that).

In Ireland there were local elections and the narrative is a swing to independents, great day for the government parties, crisis for Sinn Fein.

In actual fact they are all pretty level on the last local election. SF way down on the general election. Three outright fascist racists will get elected. Out of over 900 seats. A bigger story should be that this will be the most diverse set of local councillors elected.

Not that others aren’t racist but I mean people running as racists.

Yet also the commentariat is pretty sure that the independent racist votes are going to be courted. Because of course.

European elections will only start coming in tomorrow (counts started today and the ballot sheets are mahoosive) and they all look like the centre right big parties will get one two in all three districts. Which independents get elected will change rather than the number of them I think. There are racists in the race in two of the constituencies and I’m worried about that.

Pleasantly surprised by the Swedish EU-election so far it looks like a good night for the red and green side. With 5980 out of 6589 districts counted, The Left Party (as you can guess, socialist), who I am a member of has gained 4,1% and are at 10,9%. Former party leader Jonas Sjöstedt was the main candidate, and since he is both the most likable man in Swedish politics and crystal clear in debates and interviews a good result was expected. The social democrats are at 24,9% (+1,4) and are for the first time gaining votes compared to the previous EU-election. They remain the largest party. The Greens always do very well in EU-elections, and did so as well this year 13,8 (+2,4%).

The fascists in the Sweden Democrats lost votes for the first time in an election! They are at 13,2%. (-2,1%).

I won’t bother with the rest of the parties, but there are no political earthquakes. Eu-elections do not always reflect results for the elections to the Riksdag (parliament) and smaller parties usually mobilise their voters better for the EU than the large parties. But a good night in Sweden at least.

I haven’t dared to look at EU-wide result yet!

Macron calls shock French elections after far-right rout

https://www.reuters.com/world/europe/le-pens-party-trounces-macrons-eu-vote-exit-polls-2024-06-09/

PARIS, June 9 (Reuters) - French President Emmanuel Macron rolled the dice on his political future on Sunday, calling snap legislative elections for later this month after he was trounced in the European Union vote by Marine Le Pen’s far-right party.

Macron’s shock decision set off a political earthquake in France, offering the far-right a shot at real political power after years on the sidelines and threatening to neuter his presidency three years before it ends.

This looks tight, but I don’t think it is at all. Three or four fringe crazies to be eliminated and the media will frot itself silly at the idea of a Wiggy racist getting elected but actually there are four left wing candidates to be eliminated and their vote transferred. The actual fact is that they are the largest bloc in the vote.

The media narrative was that all the independents were the biggest bloc or would be if they were one party but they weren’t.

The left wing bloc is actually bigger than the centre right or the nutsack right. By a good distance. It will be as it was going to be whichever muppet the two biggest centre right parties put up, Lynn Boylan from SF and CiarĂĄn Cuffe from the greens. In the local elections I count greens as centre right (as they are, forming part of the government which got 50% of the vote in the locals) and as left in Europe.

Contrary to the media narrative the entire nutbag right vote was equal to one of the mainstream right parties and one third of the combined left vote. But again, that story won’t be told and soul searching on how the centre right can win the racist knuckle drafters will instead be the story (one of them was giving out dog’s abuse about all the spoiled votes that should be his: his supporters seemingly couldn’t fill in the polling forms
.)

“Joe might have done Donald Trump a favor, and I say this affectionately, by insisting that when it’s not his turn to speak that they mute his microphone, ’cause I think that was a mistake in the first debate in 2020,” Hannity said, recalling Trump’s terrible performance the first time the pair squared off in the last election.

They shouldn’t mute the mic. It should be attached to a shock collar that triggers when it’s used out of turn.

Wow, I really wish they’d picked a different verb - given the GOP actively targeting people to harm them.

“Focused on” would have been a much better choice for phrasing here.

I think even “aimed at” sounds better than “targeted” in this context.
