He’s made a lot of Iain Banks references which indicate he’s definitely read some of his work - but also, even more clearly, not understood any of it. Musk is the kind of guy who reveals his “depths” in a way that shows his depths aren’t that deep…
Reminds me of how Trump apparently loved the movie Citizen Kane but thought that it was a cautionary tale about a man who wasted his life and potential by staying married to a woman who didn’t recognize his inherent greatness. (Yes, really.)
More fancifully, the Muskrat could be a SC agent, whose job is to make the downsides of capitalism and celebrity worship abundantly clear, so the Earth can survive long enough to have another go at that test we failed back in the 1970s in The State of the Art.
If Musk is any character from Bank’s books, it’s Joiler Veppers from Surface Detail. A hyper-capitalist shit, who’s quite at home owning (and raping, and murdering) slaves, and entirely happy with selling anything to anyone, provided he makes a profit.
(Close runners up would be Geis from Against a Dark Background, or Sal from The Algebraist. In fact, none of the very-rich characters in Bank’s work are sympathetic).
About ten years ago I was quite neutral wrt Elon Musk.
This neutrality was tilting to appreciation, when I discovered the names of Space-X landing ships (Just Read the Instructions and Of Course I Still Love You).
I thought, maybe, he chose those names as he, as me, loves the Culture series and the political stance of its author, as they transpire from the books.
Well, he squandered that quite quickly: reading (possibly) and quoting are not sure sign of understanding, I see.
The most obvious problem with the comparison between those two megalomaniacs is that one of them, while a mass-murdering sociopath, was actually very capable and intelligent.
The other one threw away $44 Billion in the name of an unfunny marijuana joke.
(excerpt) Elon Musk has questioned reality after speaking with a man with a voice that sounds “exactly like him”. The tech billionaire took part in a Spaces event on X, the company formerly known as Twitter…
Also taking part in the discussion was Adrian Dittmann, whose voice and laugh sounds remarkably similar to Mr. Musk’s.
