In other news, seems that buying Twitter was bad for Tesla:
Certainly, on a mental health note. I think Jaron Lanier has written extensively on this, and I think he’s onto something…
I’m holding out until we see whether or not the deal actually goes through… but I don’t blame anyone who’s opting out now. One of the circles I’m in (the Trekkie one) is in the process of establishing a Discord server as a new community home.
I feel bad for the artists, writers and streamers who utilize Twitter as a part of their profession. I’ve seen a few seeking alternate means of reaching others, like newsletters, but this is going to hurt so many creative folks, especially those with smaller followings or those just establishing themselves.
Yeah, really glad that I don’t need any social media whatsoever to earn my living.
There also seems to be a significant increase in user numbers on left wing Mastodon instances. For example meow.social (Mastodon instance for furries) had about 3.7k users two days ago I think, and now has 4.28k.
So. Much. This.
Through the waves of horrible LGBTQ+ laws being passed in Republican controlled states is this one, heartening fact: they have already lost.
They lost the culture war. LGTBQ+ persons are being increasingly accepted and are increasingly represented in media, politics, and other public spheres.
They lost the economic war. Companies have pretty much accepted that being LGTBQ+ positive is good for the bottom line.
They lost politically. In order to keep a hold of power they have to resort to rigging the system through gerrymandering, voter suppression, and now through outright election theft.
All they have left is passing laws that allow them to say “our bigotry isn’t illegal.” That is not strength. It is the ultimate sign of weakness.
There is still much to do, and far, far to go towards LGTBQ+ acceptance and full rights. There are still far too many bigots out there. But the war has been won though the battles are not over. It’ll be long, hard work. There will be setbacks. It may not feel like it, but the war is won as long as we don’t stop fighting.
I heard criticisms of the WFG and of Elon’s subsequent gift to them, but I think that’s mistaken.
To the thing where Twitter is being both bought and taken private…there were worse suggestions, the ‘limit of the law’ being chatted up in a way that soused the first amendment of the Constitution, so…it was Julian at CATO that called out the bad in that. I’m thinking cheery thoughts (for less than $45B,) that he’ll have some of Grimes’ friends by from time to time to create censorverses to everyone’s satisfaction and hand out certification cards for who’s in the Fire in Confined Spaces fandoms.
It’s not gangsterism… it’s the actual definition of fascism.
Ok, so I guess I can’t leave Twitter yet since I just followed you.
I will recommend getting a blocklist for those sticking around. I’m using Block Together although there are others available. It helps more than I expected!
ETA: Anyone else remaining can probably guess my username if they wish to follow me. It’s such a mystery, I’m sure!
Quite a while back I thought someone shared an article about content moderation: basically about how if you don’t kick out bad actors real conversation can’t happen. It was something that informed or explained the content moderation here in BBS. If it was an article I’d like to read it again. I feel like it could inform this conversation about “free speech” on Twitter.
Anyone know what I’m talking about?
I believe it was over in the moderation thread… try looking there.
Sigh, I managed to avoid it until recently. At least with facebook I can post “as” my client and keep my name out of it.
I just joined meow.social Mastodon instance and it’s awesome. There’s no Twitter drama there
The nazi bar story perhaps?
Yes that was it!! I found it. I’ll just attach screenshots here rather than post a Twitter link. Slightly off topic maybe but I feel like this kinda explains why I’m concerned about the prospect of Musk eliminating moderation on Twitter… which, who knows he might have to backtrack on…:
Thank you, Good to know.
Yes. That is how content moderation is supposed to work.
REMEMBER: The 1st amendment protects you from the GOVERNMENT trampling on your rights. Not companies. not citizens. Case law has proven this time and time again.
While I hardly use twitter at all (I’m there more or less for the browse), if I don’t like what I see? I’m leaving.
