Employees at Silicon Valley start-up fast 36 hours each week

That sounds really fucking dangerous, and puts them at extended liability for malpractice.

Aaaaaand I’ve followed the link. “Integrative Medicine”. I remain unimpressed. Integrative medicine is just a name-shift from “alternative medicine”. Just like how “Intelligent design” is a name shift from “creationism”.

The entire process is closely medically supervised, with weekly meetings and bi-monthly labs and exams.

Also, it’s impossible to sue Kaiser for malpractice. It’s a members-only HMO, and the membership terms require you to accept binding arbitration and give up the right to sue them. That said, as far as I’m aware, they haven’t killed anybody yet. The two big downsides are 1) the dropout rate for the program is high (~50%); and 2) it’s very expensive (~$31/lb of weight lost.)

OK, although there would also be the liability (for a plan where users don’t sign away the right to sue) of not suggesting a treatment which would otherwise deal with the long-term problems, if the treatment is science-based and accepted by the medical community.

I’d like to see their studies/data before considering them legit in any way. That dropout rate can be indicative of researcher DoF, and self-selecting trial participants.

The site didn’t seem to have links to any actual studies.

Although there were quite a few testimonials.

I’m unconvinced, as long as these people are hawking a cure, I think they need to have links to their evidence. And a dozen people saying “I sure don’t feel like regretting paying money for the treatment” isn’t the same as evidence.

I’m so glad to know I’m not the only one for which that jumped right out. (“A what?,” I said out loud, but since the only one in the office here other than myself was one of the cats, I got no coherent response.) I think this diet may be affecting their brains in undesirable ways.

Isn’t every podcast seemingly sponsored by subscription underwear and sock companies right now? I keep hearing about them.

Uber. But for underwear.

Airbnb, but pants?

Dollar Shave Club. But for mustache wax.

I know This American Life has some clothing in a box service, but I don’t know if they do socks and underwear. I do order socks from Sock Dreams a few times a year, but that’s not exactly a subscription service!

Little melodramatic, no? Ready to die. Really?

Does visualizing another underwear subscription service really require fasting induced hyper-creativity?

They usually send me one even if I don’t ask. I’ve had one on my laptop for quite a while now, and have passed out spares to people who seem like they might like the site. (Assuming they don’t already know about it, of course.)

How did I not know about Sock Dreams? Thank you and darn you (because my budget is too tight to go crazy and order loads of new socks)!

I have done some five day fasts, and what you’ve said jibes very well with my experience.

On days one and two, the biggest downside to fasting is “What shall I do with these several hours each day in which I normally fiddle with food?”

Days three and four are basically misery…

Day five is like “Wow, I could keep on like this indefinitely.”

But I’ve always ended my fasts on day five, since that was the plan.

This is pure anecdote. YMMV

I’m more than happy to share that site, glad you enjoy it! Not to turn this into a commercial for them, but they’ve always been great for customer service and shipping, too. I do know what you mean about the budget, though. I try to be good about ordering only what I really need, with maybe one or two more decorative items with each order. (Which usually means some dark red military boot socks for day to day wear and stripes or rainbows for the weekend!

Edit: I’ve started a thread to talk about shopping sites we’d endorse.
