I’m going to say that I think most QAnon folks aren’t brainwashed. Why? Because many of these people are or were also talking similar bull**** about there being Satanists in the Democratic Party or that they were controlling them some how (not the Levayian Satanists, mind you, just the imaginary ones). So this isn’t something that came out of nowhere. It has grown but it’s not much different than the bull**** that was floating around in the 80s about D&D and Judas Priest albums. These folks just want to get their moral panic on and some are probably just fascists. Brainwashing doesn’t sit well with me as an excuse because it just allows bad actors to run rampant claiming disabilities as a cover thus making those of us with disabilities into pariahs.
I really wish the article hadn’t used the term brainwashed. There’s no scientific definition for it, and it’s somewhat discredited through work of cults and their apologists back in the 80s. Usually when there’s any modern discussion of undue influence or control techniques, the apologists drag the discussion back to brainwashing, knock over the board and declare victory.
Since QAnon is mainly an Internet thing, it’ll be hard to survey and categorize them. A lot of them will only distrust MSM, be too credulous of oddball claims, etc, verses the ones who tip over the edge.
