I don’t know if they can buy their spines back from the pawn shop though.
i see part of the misunderstanding. i’m talking about congress in particular. not the rank and file angry trump supporters. the gop leadership.
while they are and will remain steadfastly unamerican. a separate question is whether they will play political ball with the democrats if biden is the president.
i personally predict yes. not on everything, but on some major things for sure. part of the gop establishment’s reason for being so against “everything obama” was their own personal racism and their ability to use the racism of their base to further their power grabbing agenda.
they will do less of that - are already doing less of that - with biden. they will likely further their agenda with (some) compromises and (some) political negotiating instead.
yes, there may be some pretty ugly days in the very near future. no doubts about that. yes, the gop deserve the boot. also no doubts about that.
I don’t know if their recent history supports that. Just look at how they acted when the last Democratic president was in office… and the one before him. The current GOP leadership is the problem, I’d argue. They are pure tribalist ideologues at this point. The people who have shown any willingness to compromise have been sidelined or have dropped out of trying to steer that ship. They are completely and utterly unwilling to cede any ground at this point. I don’t see how that will change in the future without completely overhauling their leadership to far less ideological figures who will work in the best interest of the country/world, and not the party.
Name a single official vote that Republicans in congress have done to support Joe Biden or would indicate any willingness to do so. Mitch McConnell’s nihilism is not going away just because he isn’t being motivated by racism against Obama.
This. The GOP has been heading down this road since at least the days of Bill Clinton thanks to Gingrich. It’s metastasizing.
You could argue this started with Nixon’s southern strategy and expanded with Reagan’s assault on liberalism and government playing a role in ensuring fairness in an unequal society.
and yet, even with bill clinton they compromised. gingrich failed to fully get his way in part because of that.
he’s not president yet, so i can’t. instead, look to the lincoln project, the former officals, and all of the op-eds. here’s a partial list from last month, the list has gotten longer since.
biden’s policies aren’t radically different from obama’s. none of these people were pro-obama.
[eta] part of the reason trump won - part of his popularity - was because of the backlash against america’s first black president. or at least that’s what i believe. if there’s anything good that can come out of this last four years, it’s would be that white americans wake up to how entrenched racism still is in america.
there would have been better ways of learning that then seeing trump be president for four years, granted.
The entire time Obama was in office they talked that way. They talked and talked about how they would happily work together with anybody including Obama. They talked about how important following the political norms was. I’m not seeing anything new or different, especially from people who actually hold office. The Republicans in office right now had a chance yesterday to support democratic norms and support Joe Biden and they decided not to. There is no evidence that all of this talk represents anything other than that they don’t like Trump, not that they are willing to help Biden.
i suspect their melanin filters made it difficult for them to be able to follow obama’s policies.
Notably, virtually none of those people are actually in a position to do anything with Biden once he’s elected. And the Mitt Romneys of the party just all voted to confirm the far-right SCOTUS nominee of a person they think is manifestly unfit for the office. Real profiles in courage, them.
Meanwhile, the shitheels who are actually in positions of power and authority are doing crap like this:
There is absolutely no reason to expect their behavior to change if Biden wins. It’s not in their best interests to legitimize a Democratic presidency.
Perhaps- but we won’t have to watch him then.
I think that’s some of it, but they displayed these same behaviors to a lesser extent in the 90s under Clinton and most certainly were entirely hostile to Hillary Clinton at every step. Since they see the democratic party as the party of people of color, women, and the far left-wing, they feel as if they must stamp it out at all costs.
this exactly.
with clinton they were using a mammary filter.
poor kamala, with both filters in place it’s remarkable they even see her.
I’m arguing that there are other things happening, though, rather than just straight up racism and misogyny (though it’s fed by those). This is a trend for a while now, on the fringes of the leadership of the party since the 60s, starting with Goldwater. It’s been a slow power grab within the republican party itself, and now it’s coming from our democratic norms over all. While their racism/misogyny/etc is very real, it’s also in service to the larger attempt to seize power…
That Wisconsin absentee ballot decision yesterday presages bad things to come.
We’re entering uncharted waters in the middle of a perfect shitstorm.
