In a related story, In Russia, defendants are allowed to bring guns into courtrooms.
According to the fine print, said guns can only be used for suicidal purposes. Any use of guns to harm anyone else will lead to additional charges and trial delays.

An ex-prison official with cancer. Given his supposed familiarity with how illnesses are handled in Russian prisons, he may have felt a great need to expedite things and in as painless fashion as possible.

That was my thought. Not only would he know what conditions were like but it it just possible some of the other prisoners might take a bit of revenge.
