I know this was part of a longer story about time travel, but I wanted to pull this bit out because it really drives me nuts how this argument is actually used. If an indigenous person killed my father, no one would call me racist for saying some extremely nasty things about that indigenous person. But if I did a tomahawk chop at them, or I pulled out racial slurs while I was saying those nasty things that would be racist.
And in this scenario, I could understand someone having sympathy for me and saying, “Well, the person they were insulting did just kill their father, so you get why they are angry.” I think Chris Rock once did a routine where he talked about saying offensive things when he was angry, basically saying that if he’s angry at you he’s trying to hurt your feelings, so of course he’s going to say the most hurtful thing he can think of.
But it’s still a racist action.
I think they are being treated the way a crazy guy yelling on a street corner would be. People just put their heads down and walk past. People have interviewed Nathan Philips and they have interviewed Nick Sandmann, and they probably just don’t want to interview anyone from that crowd. Talking about them would just mean more people paying attention to them.
