California to Florida real estate isn’t even a fair comparison. Floridians are going be swallowed by the sea while CA has Fires, Earthquakes AND we are sliding into the sea.
I love how all the proposals are “could include hotel, retail, dining, theme park, and entertainment”. So, everything basically. You want to do everything everywhere. Got it.
That was exactly the point of the “Disneyland Forward” PR initiative. They’re asking the city for special flexible zoning so that they don’t have part of their property zoned only for hotels, part for retail, part for theme park expansion, etc.
Something, something…fifth largest economy in the world…something, something.
Despite the natural disasters, the smart money is on California holding its value a lot longer than Florida.
I revel in the fact that it may be unnecessary for me to ever visit Florida again. They make bad decisions, and a decent Cuban coffee if you are in the immediate Miami area. Aside from that, Florida can shove the rock shrimp and beloved pets getting eaten by a gator.
“Bienvenidos a Miami” sang a great American slapper.
I revel in the fact that some of the worst MAGAts I have to work with gleefully went back to in-person meetings, but now in Florida (they all went there during the pandemic to get away from libruls in Dem cities), and I was able to tell them I’ll continue meeting via Zoom only for the foreseeable future.
California, on the other hand, will get my traveler’s spending, whether for work or play.
I just look forward to the day when conservative Californians stop trying to liberate Texas cities from… liberal Californians? Democracy? Functional roads? I don’t even know anymore.
Probably first of many retaliations: no more Florida discount at Disney World?
That’ll do before they go Oath of Fealty in reverse.
Republicans are willing to turn anti-capitalist so long as they feel like their feelings got hurt lol
I like Beau’s take on this. In the future, it would be great to see Governor Abrams of GA roll out the red carpet for Disney to create a new and improved, innovative and eco-friendly theme park in that state. There are deepwater ports in Georgia and South Carolina, so maybe more cruise lines could be convinced to leave FL, too. Corporations could keep hitting Florida in the wallet until voters dump their current crop of GOP pols*. Until then, maybe a huge gap in revenues will finally get those legislators to pay attention to governing instead of the endless list of fear and hate-mongering issues made up by right-wing pundits.
*Eliminating campaign contributions would be very effective, too.
I read the other day that Colorado’s governor is courting Disney to relocate there, though I don’t know how serious the offer was.
I can’t see anything equivalent to Disney World being built out there. Among other things, Disney parks tend to only be located in places that can remain open year-round. But maybe someday we’ll see a Disney-operated ski resort. That was one if the things Walt was trying to do before he died, and it’s what the Country Bear Jamboree was originally designed for.
And? I’m no fan of the mouse either and have long thought that the Reedy Creek Improvement district should be abolished and can recognize that this idea is astoundingly stupid. A thoughtful plan to unwind the special district would probably require the better part of a decade to implement. Instead, in the name of bigotry the Republicans just yanked out the most functional infrastructure provider in the state, took on a mammoth stack of debt, and told every large project in the country that deals with the state of Florida are worthless and subject to being shredded on a whim without regard to scale of damage.
Instead of thoughtfully unwinding Reedy they decided to create a time limited threat tool that will be blasted in court. Disney will probably prevail in court, but have every incentive to start the process of relocating their investment. Control of the surrounding region was part of the reason for the Florida site from the start.
i’m suddenly reminded of when shrub was governor of texas and he cancelled some auto emissions testing contract. when the testing company sued for breach of contract, texas settled, and paid with environmental protection funds.
desantis will probably do something like pay the disney debt out of the education budget just to hurt as many floridians as possible
Yeah, I remember that Mineral King attempt (our neighbor had a family cabin in MK that went back to the 1940s). Many residents of Tulare County weren’t happy with Disney at that time.
Mineral King is a beautiful pristine wilderness area that did not/does not need to have a ski resort (and I’m a skier).
From the article, DeSantis said:
“Obviously there are concerns about the economy but there are even larger concerns about the unabated immigration that the Biden administration is promoting.”
So, when it comes to a known deadly virus spreading unabated, the economy is more important, and everyone should be willing to risk their lives so people can keep eating out. But when it comes to facing a non-existent bogeyman, the economy takes second place.
That tracks for these guys.
It’s even worse. The crackdown on immigration is part of the reason for the so-called “inflation” the GOP is trying to pin on Biden.
