You can see the shock on Jennifer Jason Leigh’s face during that scene that doesn’t feel like acting, and a weird beat where you get the sense that she’s thinking " wait, was that supposed to happen?" It’s painful to watch.

Yeah, pretty disappointing that he’s the only guy in the Senate who is pushing for appropriate actions regarding Senator Menendez yet he’s so off-the-rails on what’s going on in Israel/Gaza, among other things, that it becomes easier for people to dismiss him out-of-hand.

That’s not accurate. Several senators have done so. While it’s still not enough, the senators who have called for his resignation include Fetterman and:
Brown
Welch
Baldwin
Tester
Casey
Rosen
Kelly
Warren
Booker
Markey
Bennett
Heinrich
Hassan
Hirono
Klobuchar
Warnock
Blumenthal
Murphy
Duckworth
Stabenow
Durbin
Murray
Cantwell
Carper

When I say “appropriate actions” I’m not talking about just calling for him to resign. That’s total weaksauce, especially when Menendez is so shameless and clearly will not resign willingly. I’m talking about pushing for his expulsion, or, failing that, at least supporting Fetterman’s resolution to prevent Menendez from continuing to receive classified briefings. As far as I’ve seen no other Senators have done either.

“You know who we have? Kid Rock and Ted Nugent” should be him complaining. I mean, he must know there’s a reason Republican rallies keep playing other people’s songs without permission.

Whether or not you’re a fan of Disney or think that their special district in Florida was a good idea, they were clearly being punished by the Governor for their speech, so it’s a shame to see the case tossed out like this:

If the Governor and state legislature had provided any plausible deniability that this action was related to the free speech issue then I could at least understand how a judge could rule this way. But this case was so clear-cut that many groups, including a bunch of former Republican lawmakers, filed amicus briefs saying how this retaliation was un-democratic and would set a dangerous precedent.

they don’t mention a specific reason. either crime, the perception of crime, or fear of unhoused people. :person_shrugging:

Clorox has hired additional uniformed security guards to protect employees at its Oakland headquarters, KRON4 News has confirmed. The security guards are being tasked with safely escorting employees to and from BART, parking garages, local restaurants and coffee shops, according to a statement from Clorox.

Clorox also said it had conducted safety awareness trainings in partnership with the BART Police Department. The company said it regularly shares “safety and awareness trainings” in partnership with BART police, and also regularly shares “safety messages and practices.”

“Oakland has been our global headquarters for more than 110 years, and we are committed to making the city better and safer for everyone,” the company said. “We’re actively working with local business leaders to identify ways we can collaborate to make Oakland safety for our collective workforce and the entire community.”

Last week, another employer headquartered in downtown Oakland, Kaiser Permanente, issued an advisory to its employees to remain inside during breaks and lunch hours due to security concerns in the area.

eta: the linked kaiser article adds only

“In response to the current crime environment affecting all businesses and the entire community of Oakland, as well as other communities across the country, we continue to provide guidance to keep employees as safe as possible.”

Goodbye for Now to the Robot That (Sort Of) Patrolled New York’s Subway

The New York Police Department’s Knightscope K5 debuted in Times Square amid fanfare from Mayor Eric Adams. It ended its brief tour exiled to a vacant storefront, all alone.

https://www.nytimes.com/2024/02/02/nyregion/nypd-subway-robot-retires.html

New York City has retired the robot, known as the Knightscope K5, from service inside the Times Square station. The Police Department had been forced to assign officers to chaperone the robot, which is 5 feet 3 inches tall and weighs 400 pounds. It could not use the stairs. Some straphangers wanted to abuse it.

“Eventually, this is going to be part of the fabric of our subway system,” Mr. Adams said in September, when he hailed the robot’s arrival in Times Square, part of a monthslong pilot project that he said was costing the city only $9 an hour.

“This is below minimum wage,” Mr. Adams said. “No bathroom breaks. No meal breaks. This is a good investment.”

Fake Biden robocall traced to Texas-based Life Corp, officials say

https://www.reuters.com/world/us/new-hampshire-attorney-general-fake-biden-robocall-traced-texas-based-life-corp-2024-02-06/

Formella said traceback technology was used to trace the call back to the originating provider and identified the source as Life Corporation.

The originating voice service provider was Lingo Telecom, a Texas-based service provider, he said.

Lingo Telecom did not immediately respond to a request for comment. The New Hampshire attorney general’s office said that after Lingo Telecom was informed that the calls were being investigated, Lingo Telecom suspended services to Life Corp.

New Hampshire officials said they were also looking into allegations that “the recorded message was likely made using software from ElevenLabs” but could not confirm that now. That company did not respond to a request for comment.
