Some of the larger malls have a daily population that dwarfs some cities. For example, the Mall of America has an average daily “population” of over 100,000 visitors. With that many people in there, the city police would be responding to calls constantly anyway, so it is more efficient for the city to just post some police there full time.
Additionally, people do not respect security guards in the same way they do actual police - they’re more belligerent towards security guards and don’t take them seriously. Having actual police on hand can often keep situations from escalating because the simple presence of an actual cop who can arrest them makes them think twice about what they’re doing.
this is my point. the “security guards” at colleges are sworn police just like bart. neither group exists to serve the public , they exist to serve the institution. and yet they can carry guns, and arrest people for reasons.
Except that’s not what typically happens. (At least not the ones I’ve seen first hand.)
The police assigned to those areas are actually more restricted in what they can do. They’re city police officers first, and so have to hold to the code of conduct the city is enforcing. Additionally they’re given more restrictions by the school, based on what the administrators want - this actually leads to them being more restrained overall.
For example, if a city cop beats up a belligerent drunk college kid, it’s bad but just “normal” bad cop. If it’s a college cop who beats up a student? That’s fucking apocalyptic. It pisses off the students, it pisses off the parents, it pisses off the alumni, and it makes students less likely to enroll at that college. Of the two, which cop do you think more likely ends up fired for what they did?
Any police force can go bad. It’s just less likely the specialized ones like colleges will due to the more concentrated backlash.

respect fear

I’m sure glad the police never escalate situations.

I’m not saying they don’t. I’m just saying that from what I’ve seen, security guards are at least as likely to. The difference is that people are less likely to try start shit with real cops than with security guards.
