Anyway, I’m sure I’ve told this story before, but I was a struggling single parent once. Daycare for my 2-year-old was prohibitively expensive. In order to pay rent and eat, AND keep my job, I had to get a childcare subsidy - AKA government assistance.
I had an hour commute and the subsidy still didn’t cover all my childcare costs. Dad wasn’t paying his child support (an ongoing problem as the child in question is now 21 and he still owes me almost $30k). I lost my car because it was a lemon and I couldn’t afford the repairs and the payments.
Given that the deck was stacked against me anyway, staying home with my kid and going entirely on welfare seems like it might even have been the better option.
