Tesla won’t be getting any license plates yet. The funny thing is that my gut feeling is saying that Transportstyrelsen might take this to the supreme court. Not because they have any particular feelings about Tesla or that they dislike loosing a case. They will want to have a clear precedent on how they should interpret the law.
I hope they do. Because then this will drag on for Tesla.
The Swedish Transport Agency is granted a trial permit. This means that Tesla is not allowed to obtain license plates directly from the manufacturer while awaiting trial, according to the decision of the Göta Court of Appeal.
The Court of Appeal has also decided on a stay of execution of the district court’s decision, meaning that it may not be enforced for the time being.
“Before the Court of Appeal makes a final decision, Tesla should have the opportunity to complete its argument,” the Court of Appeal stated in a press release.
On Monday, the Swedish Transport Agency chose to appeal the decision of the Norrköping District Court.
“We want to have it examined whether it was correct to make this decision without allowing us to express our views beforehand,” said Anna Berggrund, director of the vehicle information department at the Swedish Transport Agency, to TT.

The automotive giant has sued the Swedish Transport Agency and demands that the license plates be issued pending trial, known as an interim security measure. Tesla won in the district court, and the Swedish Transport Agency was given seven days to amend its current agreement with Scandinavian Motorcenter, the manufacturer of the plates, or face a fine of one million kronor.
On Monday, the deadline expired, and the Swedish Transport Agency appealed the decision, demanding a stay of execution.
And now the norweigans and danes are joining the blockade. The finns will probably join too soon.
Norway’s largest trade union, Fellesforbundet, is announcing a boycott of the transport of Tesla cars to Sweden.
Fellesforbundet has notified Tesla’s Swedish subsidiary, TM Sweden, of a boycott against the transportation of new Tesla cars through the country.
– Our union colleagues in IF Metall have the full support of the union in the conflict with Tesla. They are fighting against an anti-union company on behalf of the entire workforce. Now, Tesla should immediately accept IF Metall’s demands for a collective agreement, says union leader Jørn Eggum.
If TM Sweden does not sign an agreement by December 20, the union will initiate the boycott. The union has not yet disclosed the exact form the boycott will take.
– It is too early to say what specific measures we will take to support the strike in Sweden. This is a clear signal to Tesla that they cannot transport Swedish Teslas through Norway. If they attempt to do so, it will be met with actions, and we will take the necessary steps to make this work, he says.
As of yesterday, Denmark’s largest trade union, 3F, announced sympathy actions. Dagens Arbete has learned that notices of action against the transportation of Tesla cars will also be issued by Finnish trade unions shortly.
– In the Nordic countries, there is a broad consensus on the importance of well-organized working life. This ensures employee participation and reasonable wage and working conditions. The right to demand a collective agreement is a natural part of our working life, and we cannot accept that Tesla remains outside of this," says Jørn Eggum.
