It’s easy when you don’t see them as actually human. And a very short step to including lots of others intot the “not really human” category. The frightening thing is how common this sort of mindset is!

The idea that humans can go extinct from overpopulation is a weird one. If there’s total environmental collapse from it, sure, and I think there is good reason to be worried about that. But I’d generally expect the generalist species, ones found on every continent and have shown they can survive in just about every habitat, to be the more likely to survive through that. I’m more worried about civilization.

Low genetic variation isn’t new, it’s one humans had before they exploded in numbers, and clearly didn’t prevent that. You would think that would in the long run help with that too, right? Instead…the pressure of having too many in one place and the pollution they cause leads to low quality sperm? That…would correct itself as the population started coming down, then, right? What is it with people and panicking about sperm?

Humans might well go extinct. It’s not exactly a rare thing to have happen. But…these seem like really non-compelling arguments for the reasons why.
