The father I grew up with was a WWII vet. You know how many stories he regaled his family and friends with? Zero. My grandfather, the WWI vet? Zero.

I had on grandfather who spent less time on the front - he got into the navy with his dead older brothers birth certificate and ended up back home after a while. He later joined the army during the occupation. He saw some combat, but not a ton, I think, but he liked to talk about the war more, etc. My other grandfather was in heavy combat in Europe during the invasion. He was in the battle of the bulge and I believe even might have been part of a liberation of a camp⌠he talked about his time in the war far less.
