Fuck Today, Continued

Ms Livdahl tweeted that she intervened, yelling: “No, Alexa, no!”

Wine just went out my nose.

My stepson just sent this photo from Boulder

ETA: Charlie was on Flagstaff Mountain (up from Chautauqua Park) when he took this photo. His housemate wrote:

We went to the top of Flagstaff Mountain to look down on all the chaos last night. There was a line of flashing emergency vehicle lights down highway 36 for as long as you could see. Running parallel to the line of emergency lights were all the headlights, stretched for miles, of all the people fleeing. The background looked like pictures I’ve seen of the carpet bombing during WWII.
We hunkered down in the wake of everything, serenaded by sirens, and completed about 10% of 1000 piece puzzle. Couldn’t watch the news.
Pictures do not do it justice.

That’s downtown Boulder on the left. The fires were a few miles beyond that, on the plain near Superior, CO.

Good to gather that your stepson is safely away from the worst of it.

They’re about 5 miles from the fires. 110 mph winds today, very freaky he said.

Stand your ground laws in action. She was in the garage. You weren’t defending yourself if you weren’t in immediate danger; call the police.

That’s homicide.

“My husband made a mistake and shot her because he thought she was an intruder,” the mother said. “She was in our garage and my husband just didn’t know what was going on. Oh, my God.”

When you don’t know what’s going on is always the best time to open fire. :man_shrugging:

If you are truly scared:

  • Call through the door ‘who is there?’
  • If you open the door, turn on the light

But I have seen this among the MAGA crowd: irrational fear that THEY are coming to harm my family, no matter how low the local crime rate (from strangers…crime by people you know is universally higher) actually is. Which of course just escalates the problem. A sub-contractor was working on something in my woods and came upon a poacher fishing in the pond; instead of apologizing and/or running away, the guy pulled a gun on my guy. I’ll bet my guy never goes into the woods again without a gun himself. And so, next time, someone is going to get shot…over a friggin’ fish.

I’m sure quite a few of us make a point of reading PostSecret on Sundays. All the way at the bottom of this week’s post, a teacher wrote in to say:

Morning Frank.

I am a high school visual arts teacher in SC. For the last 10 years I’ve been a Post Secret project with my photo students. We start the lesson by reading an excerpt that you wrote about how the project first began then move onto a Ted talk that you gave followed by the All American rejects music video and finish with a video of a colorguard in Florida that competed to the theme of PostSecrets.

The students are then prompted with three different prompts for them to recall things that have bothered them or burdened their heart either over the last year, week or even days. They write their secrets on sticky notes. The students then have the opportunity to put their written secrets in a box or keep them to themselves. Most students choose to release the burden of these secrets that have weighing on their hearts and drop them in the box.

The actual art project is for students to create three photographs based off of either their own secrets or secrets that they pull from the box. The photograph has to incorporate text in one way shape or form from the secret. If they chose to drop their secrets in the box than they will pull out secrets of someone else. Over the last 10 years this project has been such a therapeutic one for these high school students especially now dealing with mental illnesses. They reveal very deep issues from rape to fears about the “next step”, to things they have heard or witnesses but never shared. After the project is complete the students all display the photographs with text that they have completed. It is that much more therapeutic for students to see their secrets created by others as one final release. At the very conclusion we burn the box and over the years students have told me this has been an amazing experience for them and they are thankful for it.

Administration has asked me to not do this project anymore.

That last line is a kick in the gut.
