Holy shit, that’s terrible.

Just heard about this on the radio. Another tragedy.
Immediately had me thinking of the other, similar fire in, I want to say Philly, recently? In that case, the smoke alarms weren’t working.
IMO, the best possible larger outcome for these tragedies would be stepped-up pressure about building codes enforcement for (at the very least) rental properties. In this day and age, there’s just no reason that a fire in a duplex leads to such loss of life. We know how sprinkler systems and smoke and CO alarms work. We know about safe means of egress. We, as a society, need to hold officials’ and landlords’ feet to the proverbial fire, so their tenants’ feet aren’t burnt in real fires.
No excuse.

Which reminds me, I’m on a second floor, oughta buy a window ladder!

Please do! And if you didn’t partake in the annual New Years ritual of checking all your smoke and CO alarms, do that ASAP and replace batteries or upgrade as needed. There are too few happy mutants as it is. I can’t bear losing any more.

YES Yes you should. Today. Anyone who cannot get out of their place by at least 2 separate routes is screwed. On reason (among many) that high-rises freak me out so badly.

Ireland spends 5% of the health budget on mental health. I believe the UN recommendation is 12%

We don’t really spend much on armies and shit like that (so we should have money to spend). We do spend far too much on cops, and we could take some of that and spend it on mental health services instead for better outcomes. We have more coppers per person than the US from my calculations.

So yes, mental health services are inadequate here. And coppers are left, untrained, to deal with stuff that they really shouldn’t be dealing with.

Sounds very familiar.

Seeing very concerning tweets from Sinead, she’s deleted her account since. Really hope she gets help.

Also fuck yesterday:

A woman was seemingly randomly beaten to death by a man while she was out running at 4pm. On a canal path named after a woman who disappeared years ago, 4PM. She was probably running at that time because she was afraid to run after dark.

And in completely OTHER news, the Florida bills to prohibit ‘CRT’ being taught in schools.

No connection, nu-huh. Nope. Nada.

You could crosspost that in the misogyny thread, too, if you’d like.

“ In total, a staggering 83 active-duty soldiers stationed at Fort Bragg died in the 18 months ending June 2021, according to data obtained by Rolling Stone. Only 11 of these deaths were from “natural causes.” Many, perhaps a plurality, were suicides. But in no fewer than 33 cases, the Army has classified the cause of death as “undetermined.”

In other words, the Army can’t or won’t say how a whole platoon’s worth of soldiers died at its largest installation, home of the Special Forces, the Airborne Corps, and the Joint Special Operations Command. Over this same 18-month period, just three Fort Bragg soldiers died in overseas combat, meaning these elite troops are a dizzying 27 times more likely to die stateside than in war zones such as Afghanistan, Iraq, and Syria.”
