Sorry to hear you’re having trouble. And I’m sorry you’re taking a break. I always look forward to seeing your comments.
A good friend of mine killed himself today. Not that I think this is a good solution, but I understand his motives. He leaves behind a loving husband (one of the first legally married in the state) and a bunch of children. I’ll miss him.
I’m so sorry to hear this.
im so sorry. these coronavirus times have been full of so many kinds of loss. the stress on everyone is so hard.
don’t hesitate to reach out to a therapist or grief counseling if you need to. just to have someone to talk things through with. of all the ways of losing someone, this seems like one of the hardest
Thanks. It’s certain that he didn’t get the help he needed because he was gay. He should have been on suicide watch after a first attempt a few days before. Instead the hospital discharged him, even though his husband and another caretaker begged the hospital to keep him. He wrote several “goodbye” texts to people, and still they wouldn’t take him in. But, hey–rural county in a red state. It’s not like they’d be pro-life or any shit like that.
Defund the police.
Disarm the police.
I read a couple of articles about this, but none of them say what she ran on. They just note that she’s a member of a far right party, Brothers of Italy, which seems to have all the positions you’d expect (anti-immigrant, nationalist, nativist, euroskeptic, etc).
JFC, can people for once read a god damn history book that isn’t nationalist drivel?
“Greater Serbia” or “Greater Croatia” or whatever will always mean “ethnic cleansing”… FFS, people.
Take it away, Laibach… (I know it’s just up there, but how about again).
And really- with a population of 7 million - you’re never going to have a Serbian world.
I’m so sorry.
I can’t know what you’re feeling, but I’ve lost a couple friends to suicide and for me it brought up a lot of really tough feelings. I hope you have a good support network, and that his family does, too.
(Hugs if you want them.)
Their goal is more regional domination. “Greater Serbia” has always been code for getting out the Muslims and Catholics, or at the very least getting them to convert and “admit they’re really just Serbs converted by force” (to either Islam by the Ottomans or the Catholic Church). Same with the Croatian ultra-nationalists. Part of the reason that the federal republic worked as well as it did was that they really leaned into the brotherhood aspect of the southern Slavic ethnic groups (Yugoslavia - Southern Slavs). It helped that Tito was of mixed ethnicity. Of course, they also were not as great at incorporating Albanians into the mix and they came down incredibly hard on nationalists, which likely contributed to the post-Tito rise of ethnic nationalism.
If you get a chance, I highly recommend this graphic novel:
It’s about the artist’s father, who was involved in Serbian nationalist politics in Canada in the 1960s and 1970s. She does a great job of breaking down the deeper history in an accessible way.

Interesting… I have noticed an edginess to folks here from the former Yugoslavia regarding ethnicity that was actively discouraged in the ex-pat community in Switzerland, where the Yugoslav flag was still flying at a local club. Thanks for recommending the book…
Oh, don’t imagine the tune has changed much.
Trains on time, immigrants out, our enemies are strong but weak.
I had a look in Italian, seems her official site is on Facebook (yet another surpise), and I’m not that interestedin her politics, the fact that she doesn’t like Bella Ciao is enough for me.
Plenty of fascists in Rome, they all go into the same folder. I’m certainly not interested enough in her politics or what makes her any different from the other assholes in Fratelli d’Italia or her Grandparents to visit facebook.
Unless, they set aside all the war mongering and got busy!
