Fuck Today (Part 1)

For the obvious reason, and also because I just remembered I’ve got a midterm I have to take by midnight. Gaaaaahhhhh.

Nah, I got this. 96%. Yay, another small thing that went right today :triumph:

It’s not just the obvious reason (Trump)… I had to take my dog Danny to a specialist vet to get a lump removed from the surface of his eye. The good news: the corneal graft is healing up fine. The bad news: the biopsy came back, and it was squamous cell carcinoma. I expected that. The kicker: the excision had “dirty margins.” In other words… they didn’t get it all. Now they’re telling me he should go to an oncologist, and “eye removal is an option.” As if my dog hasn’t gone through enough yet?!? And I don’t know how much more he-- or I-- can take. I’m not even sure how much more of this I can reasonably afford… even though saying that makes me feel like absolute :poop:. But he’s an older dog and he’s already had two surgeries this year. I just don’t know what to do to help him now.

I’ve been through this myself. The one bit of consolation I can offer is that a dog doesn’t understand the implications. You feel dread for Danny, but he doesn’t feel anything except love for you and pain at the time it’s happening.

Because of this, making choices for a pet is different than making them for yourself or a loved one. They don’t understand, so at some point medical intervention isn’t the right choice anymore. His pain and confusion won’t be worth it. You will have to figure out when that time has come. You’ll be doing it with the best interests of Danny’s full life in mind.

Having had two One-Eyed Wonder Dogs in my life, I will say that even older ones adapt reasonably well.

Thank you for that! Though I’m really hoping it won’t be necessary. The poor lil’ fella’s been through so much at this point, losing an eye seems like too much, unless it’s unavoidable. I’ve got him an appointment with an oncologist next week, they can get the reports from the vet-optometrist and do a test or two. Then they can tell me where he’s at and what the options are.

I really was hopeful after the surgery in July that Danny would have some smooth sailing for a while. Then I hoped the lump-ectomy would be successful… I’m not finding much hope right now. Maybe after the next exam?

While I don’t want to discount how much the situation sucks, if he has to lose an eye, he’ll likely be just fine. Animals are amazing at adapting to things like this.

I’ve known animals that have lost one or both eyes, legs, or gone deaf and they learn to adapt. It’s much harder on us than them it seems.

As always, best wishes to you both.

Holy.
Toledo.
I was just singing this song of his today, as I drove into Austin.
He saw it all coming.
All of it.

Democracy

by Leonard Cohen

It’s coming through a hole in the air
From those nights in Tiananmen Square
It’s coming from the feel
That this ain’t exactly real
Or it’s real, but it ain’t exactly there
From the wars against disorder
From the sirens night and day
From the fires of the homeless
From the ashes of the gay
Democracy is coming to the USA
It’s coming through a crack in the wall
On a visionary flood of alcohol
From the staggering account
Of the Sermon on the Mount
Which I don’t pretend to understand at all
It’s coming from the silence
On the dock of the bay,
From the brave, the bold, the battered
Heart of Chevrolet
Democracy is coming to the USA
It’s coming from the sorrow in the street
The holy places where the races meet
From the homicidal bitchin’
That goes down in every kitchen
To determine who will serve and who will eat
From the wells of disappointment
Where the women kneel to pray
For the grace of God in the desert here
And the desert far away:
Democracy is coming to the USA

Sail on, sail on
Oh mighty ship of State
To the shores of need
Past the reefs of greed
Through the Squalls of hate
Sail on, sail on, sail on, sail on
It’s coming to America first
The cradle of the best and of the worst
It’s here they got the range
And the machinery for change
And it’s here they got the spiritual thirst
It’s here the family’s broken
And it’s here the lonely say
That the heart has got to open
In a fundamental way
Democracy is coming to the USA

It’s coming from the women and the men
Oh baby, we’ll be making love again
We’ll be going down so deep
The river’s going to weep,
And the mountain’s going to shout Amen
It’s coming like the tidal flood
Beneath the lunar sway
Imperial, mysterious
In amorous array
Democracy is coming to the USA

Sail on, sail on
O mighty ship of State
To the shores of need
Past the reefs of greed
Through the squalls of hate
Sail on, sail on, sail on, sail on

I’m sentimental, if you know what I mean
I love the country but I can’t stand the scene
And I’m neither left or right
I’m just staying home tonight
Getting lost in that hopeless little screen
But I’m stubborn as those garbage bags
As time cannot decay
I’m junk but I’m still holding up this little wild bouquet
Democracy is coming to the USA
To the USA

There is a crack in everything.
That’s how the light gets in.

RIP Leonard Cohen.
A candle has gone out.
It’s darker now without you here.
We here will learn to make our own light.
Thanks for the truly great songs you gave us.
Something to sing while I’m looking for the matchbox.

Fuck these anarchists shitheads. Fuck the people who would infiltrate a movement for their own means: pure and utter insanity. Fuck the way this is going to tear my city apart.

These people are not anarchists. They are just assholes.

since yesterday I have a nasty cold. so far so bad.

but my body demands tea and is unhappy with coffee! the horror!

Oh I know how that feels. A suggestion…

This is not coffee.
It tastes sorta kinda like coffee. It’s different from Cafix, and Inka, and Postum.
It is ersatz coffee.
But it’s not as bad for the human body as coffee is:

This is ersatz coffee is actually pretty good for human bodies:

and does taste ok. Thin. But ok. I drink my coffee black. I have never tried putting cream in DandyBlend. I have tried Raja’s Cup too but it’s got a weird aftertaste. FWIW…

I say all this as a person who loves and drinks good cold brew coffee. I am fighting off the last parts of a very very bad cold. I am still coughing and wheezing. I am hoping to avoid pneumonia. Coffee is well known to be a vasoconstrictor, and my lungs need better (not reduced) blood circulation.

Get well soon, @renke!

ETA: I finally found a link to Raja’s Cup. It’s quite bitter. Like, more bitter than anything else I list in this comment.
