Yeah any time I see either him or Glenn Greenwald pop up in the headlines these days I do a little preemptive cringe because I know it’s going to be some kind of really awful take.
Yes, we will. Colin Powell is a repeated war criminal and actually involved in more death and human suffering than almost anyone in the Trump administration. Yet, at worst the most our media claims is that he tarnished his career at the end with the second Iraq invasion. His role in the My Lai coverup is almost absent. Fewer still mention Granada and Iran Contra. An even smaller number mention his role in providing training and weapons for a string of genocides in Central and South America. If we can get all snuggly about someone with that record, we can overlook anything.
What I meant was that no one will defend, try to excuse anything, or say a nice word for Trump’s henchmen.
“We now remember the late Fred Nurk, who is probably best known for his eventful time working in the trump administration. Even though he only worked there for three months before being fired, and there is no evidence that he achieved anything of any significance or lasting import, he, unlike so many of his co-workers, was never convicted of treason, fraud, theft, or a sex crime.”
Yeah, but I think they will, even if there is nothing nice to say. Redeeming terrible people a few years after they are of power is a major product of our national political media. Mattis, Pompeo, Chao, and Carson are all obvious candidates. Carson was already highly praised before he entered politics and a few years in the political memory rock tumbler should leave him fresh and clear. Mattis is already back on the political jolly circuit speaking at the Al Smith dinner as the keynote guest in 2019 and was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences this year.
