I don’t think Stoke Mandeville is a city by any definition.

It is in the Aylesbury Urban Area and Aylesbury is the county town of Buckinghamshire, but that isn’t the same.

+ : He’s a far better player than I expected Carlisle getting. The other teams looking to sign him were Birmingham City, Derby County, Exeter City and Millwall

- : He’s an antivaxxer who got stomped on by Rangers and the SFA for Covid rule breaches.

This could either be very good or very bad.

The highest football stadium in the world is in Peru

They aren’t as brave in Scotland, you can only play at the bottom of Ben Nevis.

It might be no coincidence that Fort William FC were once considered to be the worst football team in the world.

CLUB STATEMENT - 31 AUGUST 2024 | Carlisle United Football Club

I know why it had to happen (three losses in the first four games is bad), but it’s a sad way for Paul Simpson to leave.

Gavin Skelton has gone too, so it looks like there will be a completely new coaching team brought in.

I honestly don’t get why teams do this (or maybe I do and just disagree with it). You’ve got a coach that, with the right players, has had unprecedented success, then the team goes on a slump and management sacks the coach. Did you forget last season’s success? Or the season before?

Usually, the problem is management, especially personnel. They trade out players that fit the team, bring in players who are bigger names but don’t fit or are locker room liabilities, drop that shit sandwich on the coach, then blame them for a losing streak as the coach tries to make adjustments but before they take hold.

I know why - the GM wants to look good, and for that they need to make trades and draft new players. They don’t want to take the blame for losing so they ditch the coach. Then the replacement starts winning (thanks to what the previous coach did to fix the problems the GM created) and the GM looks both vindicated and like a hero. But a team isn’t going to just miraculously start winning with a new coach. If you see that kind of turnaround, it’s mostly because the old coach was getting things on track and the new coach is reaping the benefit. Multiply that by 100 if the new coach is a promoted assistant under the old coach.

I think part of the problem is that over here a football manager is both head coach and general manager. They bring in the coaches they want, build the team, organise all of the coaching, pick the matchday squad and do interviews with the press.

A few years ago Carlisle experimented with having an head coach and Director of Football (Pretty much a general manager). It nearly ended badly.

Ryan Lowe and Rob Elliot are definitely at the top of the good and realistic list of candidates. Everyone else is either uninspiring or hopelessly optimistic (and I say that as the person who suggested that Rory Delap was available after getting Maccabi Tel Aviv the double last season).

Am I hallucinating?

San Marino have finally won a competitive game for the first time!

The side’s competitive record before Thursday’s win read: won zero, drawn five, lost 171.

I hope Tim Traveller was there, the last two times didn’t work out.

Some other sportsball stuff happened, but none of that is important because SAN MARINO JUST WON A GAME OF FOOTBALL!
