I would not have rung this asshole up. It was the smart, de-escalating thing to do, but I wouldn’t have.
Standard masks of the sort required by places like TJs mostly protect others from what the wearer exhales. They are much worse at protecting the wearer from inhaling what others exhale. Unless they are much more expensive masks designed to form a seal on the wearer’s face and filter all air that gets into the mask.
But your main point still stands and powerfully so. Anyone with a genuine medical reason for not wearing a mask would not be demanding to wander around TJs without any protection from what everyone else is breathing out.
If he really really really does not like Trader Joe’s policy, then why does he shop there? (Yeah, I know, entitlement.)
I have it on good authority that he has “A CIVIL RIGHT!!!” to shop there and they can’t stop him because they’re not allowed to sell cocaine.
Maybe he suffers from Nostradouchemas: the constant feeling of knowing you are going to be a bigger jerk at some point in the future.
The only obvious reason to not wear a mask is if he’s still healing from reconstructive surgery on his nose or face. I am certain this is not a factor in this person’s abusiveness and insistence on not wearing any sort of PPE. I’d call 3 of the biggest staff members to blockade him from going any farther into the store at the same time as calling the police to eject a trespasser.
(Yes, I know he’s white but it would be interesting to see his reaction to a message of “police are on the way” over the store PA.)
It seems like anti-maskers are really going after Trader Joe’s. I wonder why.
“I came here for an argument!”
Because the company has shown that it cares more about the covidiot dollar than their staff:

Trader Joe marketing/ad department wizzes should develop then deploy at each store a big, burly smiling Trader Joe ‘mascot’ character. Call him “Pirate Joe”. Some bearded dude in a threatening pirate get-up, armed with a couple of those big wooden rods used for ships’ rigging — belaying pins. Anyone gives him any guff about masks… well… you know how pirates can be.
Is Texas purposely populated with idiots? I cringe for his children, anti-science, anti-logic parents make for a difficult childhood, experience tells me so…
Wow.
It’s clear that a lot of people in this thread are fine with being casually ableist.
No, most anti-maskers who claim to have disorders that prevent masking do not actually have them but comments like
complete with scare quotes or
come across as especially callous to someone who physically cannot stand to have many common textiles against my skin (let alone sensitive areas like my face) and knows that my issues are on the mild end of the spectrum.
Comments like that just help affirm the sense that you don’t actually care about the health and well-being of disabled people.
It’s not fun that we’ve been taken hostage by these folks for their misbehavior. It’s worse knowing that the rest of you are willing to count us as “acceptable losses” or something shameful that should hide at home and not inconvenience you, instead of being able to actually live our lives.
BTW: This person was entering a Trader Joes/Private Property. As I understand it, nothing in this retail store is required to sustain ones life, emergency products, medicine, etc. So nothing you can’t get anywhere else.
This drama was totally and completely avoidable for said person, his choice to go there, his choice was for the emotional drama. Convince me otherwise, I’ll wait…
P.S. Haranguing retail employees is disgusting, these poor people are on the front lines of the pandemic for our retail needs, hero/above and beyond the call of duty comes to mind.
P.S.S. I’m a lifelong asthmatic, with severe bronchial issues, I must carry a myriad of medicine / breathing emergency aparati with me everywhere I go. A mask has never impeded my breathing, never been an issue, and I will continue to wear one until WE are all safe, to proffer otherwise is total bullshit, anti-science, and reckless to other human beings.
I once had a co-worker from Ireland who had strong feelings about the word “gentleman” and it pretty much equated to the usage and context here.
Oh my. If there had only been some way of predicting this event.
Of course, the governor won’t take any responsibility for implying that Texans can go and anything they want in Texas. It’s certainly not HIS responsibility if people misinterpret “100% open” as the right to ignore other peoples’ rights and safety concerns.
Meanwhile, I’m in favor of equipping frontline workers with tasers.
I gave up a few minutes in because the ADA claim made my eyes roll too much. Did he also claim HIPAA?
ADA wouldn’t apply to him as a consumer in pretty much any case. If a mask restricts his breathing that much (which it obviously doesn’t by his ample lung capacity to rant), he should be carrying oxygen.
He’s also completely wrong about TJ’s breaking the law by having a mask mandate. The Governor removed the state requirement - a PRIVATE BUSINESS can have absolutely any requirement they like. By you shopping there, you agree to their terms. If they say that everyone who walks in must be dressed as Ernest P. Worrell, then you’d best find a blue vest if you plan to go in.
Because Whole Foods doesn’t have his cucumbers or his maple syrup. Luckily both were in stock. Still he did say that the whole being asked to either mask or not go in was just like when his grandmother had to flee the nazis in occupied France.
These gentlemen and gentlewomen don’t even try to make sense. They use their ignorance as a weapon. Loudly. Explain things to them and hope you can come to an understanding? That isn’t going to work.
GoFund me for those tasers, and I’m in for a $50.
as is always the case… he got his way. the people capitulated and served him proving to himself and the world that he was right from the beginning. I’m more angry with the management of Trader Joes than I am about the guy.
