Specifically, conversion happens when you initially have possession of someone else’s personal property legally (i.e. with their permission), but then you do something to make it yours. For example, if your neighbor loans you his hunting rifle, and then you go and sell it for cash. That’s conversion. Or if he loans you his four-wheeler, and six months later asks for it back, and you act like you don’t know what he’s talking about, that you bought that four-wheeler yourself.
