That is correct about what I do. These days, I work for a civilian company that delivers food aid to Equatorial Africa and other places. I am licensed as a ship’s officer, and have a USMC background. So I primarily work on the ships, training crews on security procedures, and implement those procedures when we get to places where there is a threat. I also help the civilian ships coordinate with the military. It is one of those jobs that sounds really exciting, but is very boring 90% of the time.
I agree with you on the sorts of people that Z seems to be. The military does not want such people, so they seem to gravitate towards fringe groups with bizarre thinking. Like the open carry people. I actually support open carry laws, they serve a purpose. But there is a time and a place. All those idiots are doing is scaring people, but they get off on that. And I think some of them do have fantasies about killing or hurting people, which is abnormal.
Killing people is not something to be enjoyed. There are times when it is appropriate to fantasize about it, like when you have been a victim of assault. Thinking about doing something horrible to the perpetrator can be a coping mechanism, as long as it does not turn into obsession. There is also a bunch of interesting research about the attitudes towards the enemy in combat. There is a threshold where you are effective against the enemy, but are able to limit the application of violence to legal and morally appropriate levels, and within the ROE.
To me, the scariest thing about Z is that he seems to have the same mentality after the shooting. The thought of killing someone as an abstraction is one thing, Actually watching someone die violently is a completely different matter. Whether or not the shooting was justified, experiencing it should have changed him profoundly.
