I don’t particularly care for the judgey “what if the proles ruin this” vibe I get from that article. The original work isn’t going anywhere. If it’s truly a great work of fiction, it’ll stand the test of time just like every other work in the public domain has. Nobody is worried that someone’s going to “ruin” Shakespeare with any given adaptation…
