Why are rough rides legal? How is that not a fireable offence for police?

I’m sure he won’t enjoy the irony of being forced to obey the orders of people who have more power than him, and having no control over the situation.

It’s pretty funny, until you put it in context that for every Harvey Weinstein being tortured and depraved under inhumane conditions, there’s a dozen 23 year old doofuses who stole a car or sold a little pot or “resisted arrest”. schadenfreude aside, I’d much rather Weinstein, and all prisoners were held in a safe, humane jail that gave a shit about prisoners’ well-being.

They aren’t. But Americans love being “tough” on crime and laughing at people we hate being put in mortal danger by our own criminal justice system. It’s who we are.

It isn’t legal, but we let cops do whatever they want with impunity.

This. And aside from really serious violent crimes, where I don’t think the rest of us should have to take a chance on having them running loose again, it should really be geared towards rehabilitation, and making sure they’re in a position to lead a normal, peaceful life afterwards, if that’s what they want to do.

No shit.
Don’t care.
Worse things have happened to nicer people.

Note that Harvey is still not actually in prison (he’s at Bellevue). And is certain to be paying his people to work as hard as they can to keep it that way.

Every story I hear about the American prison system shocks me just a little more. You’d think I’d be done being shocked, but alas. Fucking barbaric, as are all it’s cheerleaders.

No, it’s not. It’s so very very not funny. Because…

…the only time anyone pays any attention to the brutality of the US prison system is on the rare occasion when some rich waste of space gets caught in it. Lowlifes like Harvey Weinstein and Roger Stone don’t give a flying fuck about poor people getting tossed into the meat grinder, but when their attack dogs turn on them it’s front-page news. The rest of the time they’re taking out full-page ads calling for the execution of black teenagers who’ve already served years for a crime DNA evidence has already exonerated them of.

I categorically refuse to have sympathy for the Weinsteins of the world. Does it disappoint some people that I don’t care about serial rapists? Well what disappoints me is that some people can’t tell the difference between not sympathizing with serial rapists and endorsing the monstrous brutality of the carcereal state that the American media only pays attention to when it abuses serial rapists.

I don’t have to have sympathy for Harvey “Oxygen Thief” Weinstein to condemn the brutality of the injustice system.

ETA: I want to add that I’m not cross with you, @anon21100188. I even, hopefully obviously, agree with your underlying point. I’m just angry that this is what it takes for the public to care, and I’m sure you do too, so sorry if I came across rage-y.

Schadenfreude is not worth pay wall. I guess I will never know

I don’t disagree with the recognition that Weinstein is a garbage human being. I disagree with the glee some folks take in tossing people they hate into the meat-grinder that we maintain to chew up everyone else. It’s not possible to have a system that abides by the rule of law for people we like, and tortures others, and unfortunately we are willing to embrace that lawless system when it suits us.

(With the same sentiment to you—nothing I’ve expressed should be taken as personal)

Fair enough. I only hope people can distinguish between glee and a lack of sympathy.

Absolutely. That’s why when shortsighted people talk about prosecuting defense counsel for defending the indefensible, I get furious.

Thank you.

Plus strategic donations to the GO₽.

How much does a pardon cost in this administration?

Trump doesn’t have the legal power to pardon Weinstein, but he could probably stage a prison break for the right price.
