Am I the only one who likes to get drunk and do my own MST3K version of Schindlerās List?
Some critics say that itās not misogynistic. Some critics say that itās a beautiful film. Some say itās a sensitive portrayal of depression. But I couldnāt put my scientific mind away long enough to ignore the implausibility of the setting-- (A very large mass will crash into the earth, soon, and it will all be over.)
Darn: the coupon has already expired. Oh, well.
livestream or it didnāt happen
That movie for me was Man Bites Dog. It was apparently supposed to be wry media commentary, but itās just abysmally sadistic way beyond whatās necessary to make a point and has zero other redeeming qualities. I would honestly recommend that nobody, ever, see this movie.
I had a nightmare about Melancholia after just seeing the trailer. Soooo probably wonāt see the movie.
I was talking about Antichrist as being misogynistic. I vaguely remember the talk around Melancholia when it came out, though. Iāll get around to it one day, I guess!
Glad I never saw it thenā¦ though Iād heard good things about it.
Just what did you agree to do to get him to open the safe? (Not that Iām suggesting you should stop.)
Boing Boing Store coupons.
I liked it a lot, although itās been more than 20 years since I last saw it, I might think differently of it now.
I usually do a Rifftrax of The Unbearable Lightness of Being.
Too late.
Seriously, most films somebody hates were part of required viewing (or at least a portion for class discussion) in my Film and Media Studies courses.
Of course, MBD was part of our section on documentary.
ugh. I had entire classes that were deliberately composed of movies many people hate. And that were deliberately constructed for people to hate. Thatās how I ended up watching Werner Fassbinder scratch his balls and talk on the phone for twenty minutes. Twice.
I shall be busy preparing for the blessed eventā¦
I saw Melancholia, but donāt really remember it having much impact on me. Von Trier strikes me as someone who might have painted himself into a corner, career-wise.
Dancer was spectacular, The Five Obstructions equally so, but I think after Dear Wendy things started to taper off. I got through Nymphomaniac I, but havenāt really had the heart to plug into II.
Personally, I think what made Dancer so great was the fact that Bjƶrk held such a major piece of it. A base comparison, I know, but without her, it would be like A Nightmare Before Christmas without Danny Elfman.

Is it as good as The Unbearable Lightness of My Beautiful Left Foot?
Either way, I am so glad for my introduction to Guy Maddin. As for Godard, I simply couldnāt absorb it.
I was even invited to take a masterās-level course about Godard taught by the video artist and filmmaker Harun Farocki, but it (subject matter Godard) was about as excruciating as waiting for Robās safe to be opened.
