Here, in the urban jungle of Boing Boing, we have hunted the elusive bird of freedom almost to extinction, but on the untamed frontier of 8chan, it still roams wild, shitting on everyone’s head.
I can’t help it if you’re not familiar with how the Zoe Quinn drama started, and I can’t help it if your reading comprehension is lacking.
Knowing how commenters on BoingBoing generally like to operate, that sort of question usually means, “Oh hai, I thought I’d come along and stir the shit pot.”
Didn’t it start when her boyfriend or ex-boyfriend posted a bunch of personal shit she had supposedly done, and his supports started harassing her for supposedly “being a slut”? Cause, being a nazi is a-okay (at least according to the boards which sent out people to dox her and others like her who are “ruining gaming” by daring to be critical), but god forbid you’re a woman and you enjoy sex…
Look, maybe you don’t like her game, but who are you to decide what “unearned attention” is?
Come on, man. You’re a BB commenter. You know better than that…
Oh, I am familiar. If you’re familiar, then I’m wondering why you’re trotting out the likes of “Well, If she did X, then she deserved it, but I’m not saying she did X” and playing all coy and refusing to clarify what you mean, not that I’m saying you’re doing that.
But you’re doing that.
If that was not your intent, it was the rhetorical device you used.
Oh I’ve been accused of all sorts of insane stuff. There was a meeting in DC where I supposedly met people I’ve never heard of and took bribes, except that I was in Belize for two weeks when I supposedly executing my master plan. I said “You know, I can just show you my passport stamps and put this to rest.” Oh, that did not go over well at all because they’d probably already spent hundreds of thousands of dollars investigating this thing that never happened. It turned out there was a fraud case behind that, and getting rid of me was part of a cover-up, and the best way to divert attention from the real fraud case was to gin up a fake fraud case (our old pal “projection,” right?). That’s when we went to the FBI because of the aforementioned death threats, and were getting pretty good traction with them until 9-11 happened.
Yeah, no. Nobody missed it. That’s the rhetorical flourish known as apophasis. You’re saying something, but couching it as a question, so you can pretend that you “aren’t really saying it.” You know the way the BB commenters generally operate around here? They know that technique. It’s a cool writing technique. But crap for arguments.
We’ve been asking you to explain yourself, and you keep trying to tell us to ignore the BB commenter behind the curtain.
If you were attempting to do something else, please explain.
I asked nicely. And you’ve evaded, cried foul, whined about having to explain yourself, and cast aspersions on all the commenters in the BBS (… yourself included, or excluded? I’m still unclear on that part) - everything but answer the question and explain yourself.
Hmmm… so maybe I should start a social networking site exclusively for people to send and receive death threats. Looks like it would be pretty popular, although it’s exactly the sort of thing that ruins it for everyone else, especially when your mom signs up and brags about getting more death threats than you, or asks why Mrs. Kaufmann’s son gets so many more death threats.
I was at a “crypto party” and gg came up. I started to comment: “I’ll tell you what its about…” And then I saw a look of borderline fear on a young woman’s face and I stopped for a second. “Its about dickheads harrasing and threatening women for having the audacity to point out some obviously misogynist things in video games.” Saw the look of relief on her face. “You thought I was on the wrong side for a second?” Her: “It has been known to happen…” or similar, but relieved that I wasn’t. That shouldn’t be an issue. Being a misogynist prick should be an outlier, and if it has to be a thing I would like to have it be mostly reserved to the traditional slack jawed troglydytes. I never had a geek girl assume that geek me was a misogynist before this bullshit (for the record not her fault- the gg douchebags fault).
My favorite story about someone getting called a misogynist was from a NPR interview with a woman transitioning to male, and how shocked they were the first time someone called them a “misogynist,” and they were like “Misogynist? Honey, I have a vagina.”
It’s good to shed light on these creepy dark areas of the Internet. It’s absolutely a public service and I applaud the effort. These are the sorts of wretched hives of scum and villiany that’d be coming up with reasons to attack people IRL no matter the “cause”.
That said, everything about GG is an enormous waste of time for everyone dumb enough to get involved in it. I mean all this over videogames? Who gives a crap. And I say that as a lifelong gamer.
