IRAQ: Rocket strikes reported at US-Iraqi military base near Baghdad airport

A detail I didn’t see mentioned anywhere here. So I am not going to assume that is the case.

Which assumes a level of forethought and competence unseen by our current administration and by the US in general in the region for nearly 20 years.

Al Jazeera suggests it was US attack.

Donald Trump’s Twitter account would seem to agree.

But a moment ago you were assuming…
Looks to be multiple vehicles burning with occupants inside at Baghdad airport. It’s too early to assume anything.

Thread on these attacks/Pentagon has confirmed the US assassinated Soleimani:

He probably got the word from Tucker Carlson on Fox.

“Two unnamed US officials told Reuters news agency that the US carried out the targeted air raids.”…

And since we’ve also killed the head of the Iranian Revolutionary Guards we HAVE TO re-elect Donny Two Scoops because war

Well, Trump just tweeted an American flag, so I guess that’s a yes? (Apparently the Pentagon also issued a statement confirming it.) They just assassinated the second most powerful person in Iran plus an Iraqi official.

Looks like Trump accidentally just started a war.

I believe you’re using that word entirely wrongly.

If that’s how you want to characterize it…

Are US elections suspended during times of war declarations?

I can’t bear to like your comment. But I concur.

No, but “now he’s a wartime president, don’t change commanders mid-fight” is a potent argument that got GWB re-elected in 2004 despite his demonstrable incompetence.

Reuters is calling it a US strike.

No one besides John Bolton (and he’s out right?) wants a war with Iran. I would predict that even much of Trump’s faithful would bail on that; one underreported aspect of his successful election was his (completely opportunistic of course) anti-war stance. Not that he wouldn’t start a war if he thought it benefitted him in any way. He is clearly a sociopath capable of anything.

BREAKING: Pentagon launched airstrike that killed Iranian commander Qasem Soleimani, Defense Sec. Mark Esper says.

Esper said Thursday night that Soleimani was “actively developing plans” to attack US troops and diplomats. The killing of a senior figure linked to Tehran’s support for foreign proxy groups is certain to heighten tensions between the United States and Iran. This breaking story will be updated.

That seems confirmed.
